Summary Although Edna did not have a good impression of Mademoiselle Reisz because of the interview that had taken place between them, she felt like she should see her and listen to the piano music that Mademoiselle Reisz played. As Edna had lost the Mademoiselle Reisz's card, she looked up into the directory and found out that lived some distance away on Bienville Street. Unfortunately the directory that Edna had referred to was an older one and on reaching the address that was mentioned in it, Edna discovered that a respectable family of mulattoes lived at that address and had chambres garnier to let. The mulatto family had been living for six months at that address and knew absolutely nothing of Mademoiselle Reisz.
As they knew nothing about Mademoiselle Reisz, Edna proceeded to a neighboring grocery store in the hope that perhaps Mademoiselle would have left her address with the proprietor. Although the grocer had known Mademoiselle Reisz, he informed Edna that she had proven to be a very a most disagreeable and unpopular woman and he thanked heaven that Mademoiselle Reisz had left the neighborhood and he was equally thankful that he did not know her whereabouts. Edna was desperate to meet Mademoiselle Reisz and she wondered who would provide her with the information she looking for. Edna suddenly realized that perhaps Madame Lebrun would be able to provide her with the address of Mademoiselle Reisz. On the other hand, Edna knew that it would be hopeless to any information from Madame Ratignolle as she had kept a very distant term with the musician and she also preferred to know nothing about Madam Reisz. In the middle of that November, Edna knew that Madame Lebrun had returned to the city and she also knew where the Lebrun's stayed.
The Lebrun's home resembled a prison that had iron in front of the door and low windows and at the side of their house was a high fence that enclosed their garden. Victor opened the door after Edna had rung the door bell and she saw a black woman right behind Victor in an apron and found it strange that instead of her Victor had answered the bell. Victor was a a dark-browed, good-looking youngster of nineteen who resembled his mother and he was surprisingly delighted to see Edna and he instructed the black woman to immediately inform his mother that Edna wished to meet her. Instead of entering the house Edna preferred to stay on the side porch where there were some chairs, a wicker lounge and a small table. As she had become tired in her search for Mademoiselle Reisz, she seated herself and waited for Mrs.
