Role of Nonverbal Communication There are many different channels of nonverbal communication. They include appearance, facial expressions, tone and volume of the voice, hand gestures, body movements (kinesics), touch (haptic's), and personal space. In business, just like in other areas of our lives, it is important not just what one says, but also how it is said, what nonverbal signals are being sent. The first thing people notice about the person they are talking to is his / her appearance.
Haircut, make up, clothing, accessories, shows, etc. all make their impressions because they are telling us about this particular person. We can make a guess as to what the persons taste is, how formal he / she is, and, in some case, even what his / her music preferences are. For business it very important to look neat and clean, wear appropriate clothes, because such appearance makes one sound reliable and confident. Human face is one of the most powerful nonverbal channels. People who have attractive faces are more likeable, they are generally treated better and get things more easily.
In business, good communicators face shows genuine emotions, such as smile, surprise, confusion, hesitation, etc. Because much of communication is done via the telephone, voice is another very important nonverbal channel. Voice shows out how a person feels even when he / she is trying to hide it. Also, the tone of the voice demonstrates whether a person is friendly or hostile, authoritative or waiting for discussion. Gestures and kinesics can be persuading, comforting, warning, angry, friendly, etc.
Business communicators have to be careful about using various gestures and body movements when dealing with people from other cultures. It is best to use conservative body during business meetings, no informal gestures. Haptics also is a very important channel of non-verbal communication. One has to be very careful with it. Some people are very haptic and like handshakes, hugs, kisses on cheeks, etc. while others regard it as violation of personal space and can become very hostile after some kind of touch as been performed.
