Vincent van Gogh's Sower is well-known for the authors use of line in the painting. Peter Paul Rubens Kermis perfectly depicts extensive use of light and color, while Chuck Closes Stanley is famous for its space. All three works exhibit extensive use of line, space and color. Authors of these works used different techniques to create impression of space, which sets up the mood of a composition. I have decided to discuss use of line, color and light in Sonia Delaunay's Electric Prism, Edward Hoppers The Lighthouse at Two Lights, and Madonna by Raphael. Edward Hoppers painting is simple in design, but it has a very strong sense of light.

Hopper in his The Lighthouse at Two Lights isolated the dramatic silhouette of the 120 -foot-high lighthouse tower and adjoining Coast Guard station against the open expanse of blue sky. Set on a rocky promontory in Cape Elizabeth, Maine though no water is visible in the painting the architecture is bathed in bright sunlight offset by dark shadows. The use of light by Hopper was aimed to bring feeling of loneliness. In Hoppers work figures and stern geometric forms within snapshot-like compositions that create an inescapable sense of loneliness. Such an isolation of his subjects was heightened by Hoppers characteristic use of light to insulate persons and objects in space.

Electric Prism by Sonia Delaunay represents the Orphic phase of Cubism. Electric Prism is a painting of shape and color. The shapes in the composition are abstract. In Electric Prism the author creates movement. We can observe a powerful S curve that sweeps through the lower half of the composition, as well as a dynamic interplay between the dominant circular forms beginning at top center. Actual and implied lines lend themselves in a way that creates movement in the composition.

Delaunay used a many of materials creating Electric Prism. These materials were crayons, watercolor, cut papers and oil paints. Delaunay was obsessed with the nature of light, especially the way in which light from electric street lamps was distorted into halos as it fell onto the Parisian streets. In her composition, Sonia showcased circles of light distorted by a prism. The painting evokes strong feelings of movement, depth and rhythm quite effectively through Sonia's skillful use of color combinations. Delaunay expresses color as the universal element.

Another important feature is that each color blends into another shade of that specific color. There are absolutely no plain areas in Electric Prism. Every area is completely filled with unique design. Delaunay's shapes are also distributed throughout the landscape. She used shapes that are more visible. In this painting we can see that these shapes are unified.

Delaunay's painting employs dominant shades of colors. Use of space in Madonna and Child with a Book made a painting to possess different characteristics. Raphael succeeded in creating a very deep illusion of space in Madonna and Child with a Book for its background. The landscape of background seems it goes very far from where Marry sited. It produces deep space behind the Marry.

Also Marry and Christ child had enough space around them. Raphael was very detailed in his painting. The artist even shows the bushes of the tree on background landscape. This gives Raphael's artwork more realism. This also makes it possible to create illusion of space.

Lines in Madonna and Child with a Book are well balanced. Raphael used real soft chiaroscuro in his painting. Because of this kind of chiaroscuro and because of specific lines, the figures in this artwork look very realistic. The color used in Madonna and Child with a Book is toned. The sky is grey and Marry is wearing dark color clothes. The skin color of Marry and Christ child is not that light.

The skin is not dark color skin but it is toned down. Extensive use of line, color and space creates an impression of presence and reality.
