Since the Industrial Revolution, two main economic systems have developed; these are capitalism and socialism. Both of these systems have its advantages and disadvantages. Adam Smith, known as the father of capitalism, bases capitalism on three main points: wealth, competition, freedom of enterprise, and profit motive. A basic explanation of capitalism would be an economy in which the people are free to engage in any type of business; the government doesnt have any control over the peoples destiny.

Socialism, on the other hand, is almost the complete opposite. Socialism is an idealistic theory of a planned economy in which the government owns all resources and the wealth is divided up equally. They plan the amount of goods to be produced and determine how it should be distributed. Socialism, on the other hand, was introduced in the early 1800 s and was initially intended to end the inequality cased by capitalism. In theory, socialism is designed to help the people and has a great amount of advantages. But in reality, it causes nothing but oppression and denies the rights and freedoms of society.

In any type of society and economy there has to be a hierarchy. That alone contradicts the whole theory. Having a hierarchy creates and upper class, hence, everyone isnt equal. Also, the goods that the society produces would be of poor quality because there is no reward for making the products better than others; there is no competition. In a socialist economy, a doctor with his degree would be rewarded in the same way as gas station attendant. In reality, socialism could never work.

Due to the nature of human beings to be competitive and having ambitions, socialism will always fail. All though it doesnt sound nice, the truth is human beings as a whole are a greedy species. We always want more and we want to be better than the guy next to us. The Status of Education Today: John Dewey was a man who made a dramatic impact on the way curriculum design is viewed today. Dewey was born in Vermont in 1859 and throughout his lifetime he became well known as a philosopher, educator and psychologist. Many of Dewey's ideas evolved from Charles Darwin's theory of evolution and the idea of pragmatism.

Pragmatism is the process of utilizing practical approaches to solving problems. Dewey once stated that we cannot solve such problems by habitual actions and thoughts, but must use intelligence to overcome obstacles. He felt that science played a big part in the educational development process and viewed science as a method of probing into the behavior of things. From this idea of environmentally based, active, hands-on learning, he began to develop a theory that became known as the Progressive Education Theory. This was the process of transforming curriculum from rote memorization to active student participation. Dewey believed that students should involve themselves in activities that stimulate their interest, and which create a desire to learn within them.

Theodore R. Sizer who wrote What High School Is thinks that Americas education system is not good enough. The goals of the American education system are all related together to get a person ready for the real world. These goals, which Sizer thinks are not good enough, range from school to school. Why should adolescents even go to school then, if they are not learning anything?

They think that since one thing wont be useful then it all probably wont help them succeed in the real world. In What High School Is Theodore R. Sizer suggests that adolescents are supervised, safely and constructively most of the time, during the morning and afternoon hours, and they are off the labor market. That is what high school is all about. Sizer believes that adolescents just go to high school because that is what their parents did.
