When one hears the word "terrorism, " a thought of a bombing, an explosion, a gunshot, or a hi-jacking comes to mind. How do individuals and organizations justify these acts of terror? These acts can be described as terrorist actions. Terrorism is defined as the unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to achieve certain political, economical, or social aims.
When I heard about terrorists hijacking airplanes full of civilians and flying them into the World Trade Centers in New York, the Pentagon, and a rural field in Pennsylvania, I didn't know what to think of all this. It came with no warning, no declaration of war, no goals or sense to these attacks. No one had the courage to claim responsibility for the attacks. But I knew the US would respond with great perseverance and endeavor to remove the scourge of such terror from the world. I was overwhelmed with sadness and sorrow for the fallen and for their families. The terrorists took from their victims all that they have ever been and all that they ever will be.
They left thousands of husbands and wives bereft of their spouse. They took away a parent or parents from thousands of children. They ended the hopes of families to have subsequent generations. They killed off family names, dreams, and futures. They have left parents and grandparents grieving to see their children and grandchildren die before them. They destroyed the lives and families of hundreds of Samaritans who rushed into the burning building trying to save others.
They will never have a chance to say goodbye and many will never recover from this devastation. What is being waged against the US is not a war of economic conquest in the form of territory or wealth of their neighbors. It does not have the goals nor does it follow the same rules of a war. It calls for a different response. The US has no interest in governing Afghanistan nor does the Taliban or Osama bin Laden have any interest in leading the US government. But these religious extremists find our western culture morally repugnant.
They think that they have perfect insight into the desires of the only true God, and they are ready to kill us if we don't live the way they think God wants us to. They hate us for our religious tolerance and plurality. We make strides towards equality for all women and they hate us for that. They hate us for our democracy, our freedom of speech, our economic system that enriches and empowers individuals, and our alliance with other nations during their time of need.
We must respond to terrorists. To those who attacked us. To those who want to end our way of life. But they won't stop their holy war if we abandon our Israeli friends to their neighbors. They won't stop if we abandon our United Nations' responsibilities in former Yugoslavia. They won't stop until we stop them.
We must destroy their capability to wage war against us, and disabuse them and any potential future terrorists of the idea that terror can ever be anything but the opposite of what they want on the issues, coupled with sudden, ruthless, inevitable destruction of terrorists and their allies. The US government needs to destroy the group's capability to conduct further violence. This must be done in order to prevent future attacks and as a disincentive for others to follow in their path. America isn't about a building or two, or about financial centers, nor is it about military bases. It's not about a place or even about a bunch of bodies. America is about a notion.
Somewhere you can go to earn as much as you can figure out how to, live for the most part, like you envisioned living, and pursue happiness. We live in a country where we don't have to see your point but are free to have one nor do we have to listen to your speech but are free to say one. We " re a collection of different people called states. And we have united our individual states to protect ourselves from tyranny in the world. America stands for a country filled with opportunity, liberty, and freedom.
