Jose Rizal, a hero! Many of our youth today equate Rizal, the hero with martyrdom, death! Being a hero isn't "cool", this is for "freaks." Jose Rizal is no longer "in." Distinguished members of the board of judges, ladies and gentlemen - I don't have to go into detailed account of dates, places and people in the biography of Pepe. No! All literate Filipinos start their lesson in history with the stories of the boy from Calamba, Laguna. Rizal lived his life in an extraordinary way.

Today, our country needs people who have the strength to complete and expand the works and wisdom of our Jose Rizal. Today, our country needs people who can revive the genuine love of Rizal to our beloved homeland and to its people. Today, our country needs people who have the courage to attain liberation and freedom from the bondage of ignorance, laziness and indifference. Today, our country needs people who have the magnanimity to enjoy peace not only for oneself but for all humanity.

It is being honest to oneself, considerate to others and dedicated to the common good. Our country now is facing scarcity, division and corruption. This is the right time to make a move. I and all those who believe in the ideals of Rizal should take part in shaping the country's moral and honor. If I practice honesty in my words, thoughts and actions now; later in life, I will be an honorable person in any form of government. If I display diligence in my studies now; later in life, I will gain wisdom to gear the nation to progress.
If I exercise patience to all people now; later in life, I will be sympathetic of the poor and the oppressed. If I try to be clean in my person and in my surroundings now; later in life, I shall be concerned about health and fitness and be protective of the environment. If I try to be industrious in performing my tasks now; later in life, I will be more aware of the dignity of labor. If I practice frugality now; later in life, I will value the principles of fair distribution of wealth.
Most of all... If I develop self-discipline now; later in life, I will be a stronger, nobler, greater person. I may not be like Rizal, but I can just be myself; struggling alone or side by side with others, standing on my feet, striving to do what is right... simply struggling to be a better person.
Ladies and gentlemen, Rizalism isn't martyrdom. It is about a way of noble life, spending one's life wisely, living with great courage, purpose and dedication. Embrace Rizalism. Embrace what is right, embrace what is just, embrace what is divine, embrace what is humane. Embrace the future.
Rizalism is not an aspiration. It is the truth.
