First he and some of Suns programmers set to work to improve Oak into what is now called Java. CIC intends to purchase $ 15 million of Sun computers, equipment and interactive network computing technology pursuant to a non-binding memorandum of understanding. The press release explains, CIC was created to utilize the latest Internet technology to build a highly reliable and secure national intranet the China Wide Web (CWW).
CWW is designed to provide Chinese customers with online services in their own language as give international subscribers real-time access to information on the Chinese business world in English, helping bridge the information gap between China and the rest of the world. Through the CWW system, companies within and outside of China will be able to search, exchange and promote business information and services. This was a major breakthrough for Sun, and gives them a tremendous opportunity in China. They have now established themselves as the builder of Chinas Internet / intranet and the growth potential is enormous. In May of this year Sun Microsystems and The Digital Television Industrial Alliance (DTVIA) announced a partnership to find the definition of interactive television in China. Sun Microsystems Java software platform will play an important role in this project, as described in a May 8, 2000 press release found on Sun.
