It was a typical hot summer day and the guys and I just came in from from shoeing horses and bucking barley. I was expecting two new guys to go out with my team because the two punks I do have are worthless. I ran into them later that day in the bunk house though. I walked into the bunk house to see a short guy with a small build standing next to a big burley guy built like a tree. Right from the start I could tell the big guy wasn't very bright. He seemed very timid and avoided eye contact with everybody in the room.

I walked up and introduced myself to George Milton and Lennie Small. George told me they were going to buck barley and they looked like good workers so I could use them. It is very rare to ever see anybody traveling together but George explained to me how Lennie got kicked in the head when he was a baby and how George had to look after him to keep him out of trouble. Then Carlson came in asking me about my bitch and if it had it's puppies yet. As soon as the word puppies was mentioned Lennie's eyes lit up. Then Carlson went on about how we should have Candy shoot his old mutt and I could give him one of my pups.

About that same time the bell rang for dinner. I told the guys we had better get a move on if we wanted to get anything to eat. The following day the two news guy, George and Lennie, went out with my team to buck barley. When we came back to the bunk house George asked me if I could give Lennie one of my pups. As soon as Lennie heard me and George agree to to let Lennie have one of the pups Lennie went out to the barn to pick out the one he wanted. George had to be sure to tell him not to pick any of them up though or they would die.

Lennie was like a big kid that George had to baby-sit all the time. About the same time Lennie came back from the barn Curley walked in the bunk house looking for his wife. Carlson cracked a couple of jokes about Curley and he almost hit Carlson. Curley saw Lennie in the corner still smiling about the puppy and barked at him, "What the hell are you laughing at?" Lennie snapped out of his day dream and looked confusingly at Curley. Curley walked over to him and at the same time that Lennie started sticking up for himself, Curley started socking Lennie in the face with left and right hooks. Lennie stood there scared and yelling for George to make him stop.

Finally George yelled, "Get him Lennie!" Lennie's eyes opened wide like a dragon being disturbed from it's sleep. Lennie caught Curley's hand in mid-swing and started crushing it with his incredible strength. Curley flopped around like a fish out of water screaming at the top of his lungs. George had to hit Lennie to make Lennie let go of Curley's hand and when Lennie finally let go the remains of Curley's hand were crushed. I couldn't believe who busted Curley's hand was, but I guess he got what was coming to him.

George immediately asked if he was going to get fired. I told Curley that if he said anything we would tell the whole embarrassing story. I told him to just say his hand got caught in a machine. After that incident Curley didn't start trouble with anyone again. The next day all of us guys were out playing horse shoes and Candy came out of the barn telling us to hurry up and come see what had happened. When I got in the barn I saw Curley's wife laying on the ground half covered with hay and next to her body was a puppy.

Everybody there put two and two together and knew it was Lennie. Curley and Carlson started a man hunt to seek out and kill Lennie. We had looked for hours and some how George had wandered away from the rest of us. Suddenly from a distance we heard a shot fired.

We all ran to where the shot came from and found George standing there with an empty look on his face and next to him the ground was Lennie lying dead with a bullet wound in the back of his head along with Carlson's missing gun on the ground next to Lennie. Curley came running up excitedly yelling, "You got him, you got him!" All I could do was stand there wondering how George could " ve brought himself to do it.
