Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, I was awoken by the sound of my alarm clock next to my bed. I rolled over to check the time to see if I could close my eyes for a few more minutes. It was 4: 30 in the morning and it was time to get up and get ready to leave. I rolled out of bed only to find out that my friend was still asleep and snoring on my floor. I chucked my pillow at him and it hit him in the face. He immediately got up and I told him it was time to go.

We tiptoed downstairs, being extremely careful so we wouldnt wake my mom up. Despite the creaking stairs, we made it into the living room where our bags and surfboards were. We gathered all of our things and took them to my freshly gas-filled truck. After everything was loaded in we both hopped in and drove down the street to pick up my other two friends that were waiting on their small brick stoop.

They piled their things on top of ours and climbed in the back. As we pulled away from their house I started the first of five cds of our journey down to the beach. The cds were a ritual: first Jimmy Buffets, Songs You Know By Heart, proceeded by Sublime, Dave Matthews, Live At Luther College, a burned cd with various songs on it, and finally OAR. Somehow we timed the music perfectly so it started when we left my neighborhood and the last song was over when we stopped at ramp 49 in Frisco, Cape Hatteras North Carolina. We also factored in a stop for breakfast at Hardees. This was a special trip to the beach, it was Senior Skip.

We planned to camp at the beach the whole weekend. We soon found out that we were going to be camping at several locations each of which came equip with a problem. I stopped my truck at the beginning of the ramp. My friend Joey was riding in the passenger seat and he and I jumped out of the truck to lock the hubs so I could put it in four-wheel drive.

Once it was in four-wheel, we began to drive down the ramp and on to the beach to look for a place to set up camp for the night. We drove down about a mile and decided that this was a good place to stay. All four of us piled out of the car and threw all of our stuff in a big heap. As we were unloading, I turned around and noticed a white jeep coming towards us. As it drew closer I learned that it was my friend Denny.

He was supposed to be meeting us. He hopped out of his trooper and said whats up. He dropped his stuff on the sand, which was anything you can imagine one would need for camping, and his surfboard and wetsuit. We hung out on the beach until we realized that it was getting dark. We needed to gather firewood for the night and unfortunately, Joey and I drew the short straw to go get it.

The two of us got in my truck and started to drive down the beach. We saw a huge scrap pile of wood on the road a few miles from where we had set up camp so we decided to go there and get the wood. However, as we were driving down the beach, I started to hear a clicking noise. I stopped my truck and put it in park. I got out and looked to see if I could figure out what the problem was.

I didnt see anything so I got back in and kept on driving. The clicking noise got louder and I began to smell a putrid burning stench. At this point I figured something was really wrong so I figured that it would be best if I took the truck out of four-wheel drive and tried to make it off the beach in two-wheel. I struggled, but we managed to make it off and the clicking had stopped. I figured that all was ok and we continued on our mission to get firewood for the evening.

After about ten minutes of driving we reached the scrap wood pile. I parked my truck on the side of the road and we loaded as much wood as would fit into the back. When the truck was full we began our drive back to the beach. When we got to the ramp I decided to try and see if my four-wheel drive would work now. We managed to get down to the beach without any problem. The problem started when we reached the soft sand.

The clicked noise was very prominent and the smell was worse than ever. I stopped and got out and again, unlocked the hubs and put it back into two-wheel. We didnt get any farther than forty feet when we started to spin tires. I backed up and drove down closer to the water where the sand was packed.

My maneuver to the lower part of the beach was a good one; however, I had to get back up above the waterline in two-wheel drive. We were probably about a hundred-and-fifty yards from our camp site and it proved to be the longest distance I have ever seen. The tide began to rise and it was getting dark. I was having a tough time driving because my truck didnt have enough torque to propel through the sand in two-wheel. A wave rushed in and turned the sand into mud. I immediately started to spin tires and got stuck.

Joey and I dashed out of the truck and waved the rest of our friends over to come help dig. The hurried over with shovels and pieces of wood in their hands. We began to let air out of the tires so they could roll easier. The next set of waves began to rush in.

One by one they buried my truck deeper and deeper. We dug all of the sand out around the tires and shoved boards under them so they would have something solid to roll on. The tide rose even higher and the water soon filled in the holes that we had dug. My truck was buried up to its body in sand and I had the worst feeling that it would stay there and become totally engulfed in water and sand. Somehow, after another fifteen minutes of hard digging and pushing, we managed to push it up above the waterline. My truck stayed there for the next two days, until our next...
