The book might be one of the most significant books in American History. It is the epic tale of blacks in American History and the roles they played in everyday society. How the were sunned by society and treated like lowly creatures. Most peoples concepts of blacks were stupid creatures that needed to be handled. Most of the whites in the South thought that they were doing them a favor.
They were teaching them how to work, respect others, listen and follow orders. The book makes you realize the horrific ordeals that they had to live through. The book starts off with the birth of Kunta Kunta. The son of Omoro and Kunta.
It tells how he grew up in the African tradition. He speaks of his family and the ways of the people in Juffure. Kunta was a very curious boy that wanted to know everything and anything from his grandmother Nyo But. When Kunta finally reaches the age that he can start his manhood training he is very solemn. After his manhood training Kunta is put in charge of watching the fields. Then came the morning that would change Kunta's life forever.
Kunta was out in the forest cutting a tree trunk that was to become a drum for his little brother Lamin Kunta was snatch by four slave hunters and taken to the coast where he would board a ship and never return to his home. Kunta was incoherent to what was going on around him all he could think about was escape. His body was hot with torn flesh from his beaten body. He thought that he was taken to be eaten not realizing that he would endure a fate far worse than death. He would become a slave and never be a free man again.
As Kunta was shoved onto the boat all he could think about was his family and the fate he was about to meet. As he was taken to the hold on the ship he stumbled to walk and receive lashes for it. Kunta was shackled like a caged animal lying on a plank not more the a few inches from another man. The stench of the hold was hard to bare. Kunta could smell the rotten flesh and feces.
Kunta felt a deep shame when he had to relieve himself on himself and add to the unbearable shame. His shackle mate was an old Wolof man. Though they could not understand each other they grew a deep bond. Epidemic broke out in the hold that ended up killing almost half of the slaves. Kunta was deeply affected when the old man died and really felt all alone in the world. After many months on the high seas the ship and its passengers finally reached the Americas.
Then were unloaded from the ship and cleaned. They were then sent to the slave block to be sold. Kunta was bought by a man named William Waller. Kunta ran away from the plantation but was caught.
When the poor white trackers found him they gave him a choice either they cutoff his manhood or they cut off his foot. Kunta choose the foot and then passed out from all the pain. We Kunta finally came to he realized that he was on a new plantation owed by his former masters brother John Waller. Thankfully John was a doctor and with the help of the Cook of the plantation Bell nursed Kunta back to health. When Kunta returned to health he was put in the garden to work. Which was a blessing because he didnt have to work in the fields.
He became good friends with another slave called the Fiddler. He explained to Kunta that he was called the fiddler because he played an instrument called the fiddle. Kunta mainly stayed to himself because he thought that the blacks on the plantation didnt respect their roots because they tried to act the way of the whites. He thought them pagan because they believed in God and not Allah. After a few years on the plantation Toby (Kunta's new white name) finally realized that he would never be able to escape to freedom started to be closer to some of the slaves on the plantation. He got the closest to the fiddler, Bell and the gardener.
Kunta realized that it was also time to settle down. He started to think about the women he could marry then finally decided to jump the broom as they called it with Bell. After a couple months of marriage to Bell Kunta thought that she was acting strange later to find out that she was pregnant. Then Bell delivered a little girl that they decided to call Kizzy. When bell delivered Kizzy the Masters niece Anne wanted take Kizzy under her wings and become friends with her. Kunta did not agree with it and voiced his opinion any chance he could.
As Kizzy grew up she followed Anne everywhere she went like a little puppy. Kunta couldnt take it any more and started yelling about it to Bell. Bell had finally had enough of it a told Kunta that it is better to be a white girls shadow then to work out in the fields like all the other children Kizzy's age. She helped Bell cook and clean. Kunta became Master Waller's driver after Luther the previous driver was sold when he tried to help a slave escape. To keep Kizzy away from Anne Kunta would take her on Buggy rides. On the rides Kunta would teach Kizzy some African words and would tell her stories about Africa so that she would know her roots. Anne who was two years older than Kizzy started to spend more time with her white friends and acted like she didnt even know Kizzy.

She taught him all the things that Kunta had taught her as a child. George helped out in the fields but deeply hated it. But he would do anything for his family. George grew really close to the other slaves on the farm because there wasnt a lot of them.
Malizy, Sister Sarah and Uncle Pompey though George as one of their own. George was a good story teller and made them all laugh and smile. He brightened their day. When Master Lea found out what a good mimic George was he had him at all the dinner parties performing. Master Lea made most of his money from cock fighting. Mingo goes boy are you just going to stand there or are you going to get on this wagon. George was so excited about going to the fights he could hardly sit still. When they arrived at the fighting grounds Mingo told George to go on and look around and that he could massage the birds and get them ready for the fights that night.

Master Lea liked the idea and told them to begin immediately strengthening the birds wings.
