Romeo and Juliet are destined to be with each other. So why does it seem like everyone and everything is against them? Not only are they fated to be with each other, they are also fated to be with each other after death. In the end, part of their death can be blamed on the adults in the play. The betrayal of Romeo and Juliet is due to destiny, misconceptions of them by the adults, and the circumstances that changed.

Although the adults dont want to sabotage Romeo and Juliets lives, they do want to protect themselves from getting into any trouble. In the beginning of the play, we are introduced to the Nurse as a kind, motherly figure and friend to Juliet. As the story progresses, we learn the true identity of the Nurse: a sadistic person. Nurse acts kind, humorous, and maternal toward Juliet only when Lady Capulet is around because shes Nurses employer. The times when Lady Capulet isnt present, Nurse taunts and tantalizes Juliet, for example when Nurse was delivering the message to Juliet about Romeos punishment, she purposely stalls and prattles on, while enjoying the suffering of Juliet. Nurse ultimately betrays Juliet when she suggests bigamy.

Romeo is banished, and all the world to nothing/ That he neer come back to challenge you I think it best you married with the County. (3. 5. 226 - 227, 230) The reason nurse betrayed Juliet and was cruel toward her was not always intentional, but it was who she really was. The feud between the two families was one factor that led to Romeo and Juliets death. If there were no feud to begin with, then the couple wouldnt have to lie or deceive anyone. The two families acted irrational with their militant quarreling and because of the feud, many people, were killed, for example Tybalt, Romeo, and Juliet. The Capulets eventually betray Juliet in the end by telling her to marry Paris.

In the beginning of the play, Lord Capulet respected any decision that Juliet made regarding marriage and wouldnt rebut. My will to her consent is but a part. (1. 2. 17) Capulet afterwards arbitrarily tells Juliet that she has to marry Paris or he will disown Juliet. To go with Paris to Saint Peters Church, Or I will drag thee on a hurdle thither. Out, you green-sickness carrion! Out, you baggage! (3. 5. 159 - 161) When Lady Capulet hears Lord Capulets decision she doesnt counsel with Juliet.

It seems like at this point Juliets parents arent at her side anymore. It was obvious from the very beginning that they never were, because Capulet always thought that Juliet would do as he says, no matter what the consequences. Friar Lawrence is a holy priest and our impression of him is of an honest man who would help others. He facilitates Romeo and Juliet by marrying them, only because he thinks it would end the feud between the two families. Intentionally, he really wanted to end the feuding, so that he can look like the hero in the end. When Romeo was exiled, Juliet went to Friar Lawrence seeking help, and the only reason Friar helped was because if the Capulets found out Juliet and Romeo got married because of him, he would be blamed.

He was more concerned with his well being than Juliets or Romeos. Juliet also had a right to believe that Friar Lawrence didnt want to help her: "What if it be a poison, which the Friar / Subtly hath ministered to have me dead, / Lest in marriage he should be dishonored / Because he married me before to Romeo? / I fear it is. " (4. 3. 25 - 29) Also, it was because of fate that the Friar betrays them. If Friar Lawrence didnt run away from Juliet when she was going to attempt suicide, he couldve saved her life, which would mean defying the fated outcome of her life. From the betrayal of Romeo and Juliet, we really get to see the true colors of the characters. The betrayal also showed how the adults acted when circumstances changed, for example with Capulets sudden change of his consent to Juliets marriage.

The adults had to betray the couple, in order for them to die. It was all due to fate. If there were no betrayals, then there couldnt have been any situations or any need for Romeo to kill himself. The adults betray the couple because they were too concerned with their well being and facing any problems.
