It was August 5, 2005, the day we all had been patiently waiting for. Our hard work was finally going to be rewarded by a gratifying applause on the Graduation Day. Standing on the stage and taking the final bow was the best achievement of my life. Through nine weeks of rigorous training, I had transformed from a civilian to a United States soldier. I had eventually earned the right to be called the defender of freedom and the American way of life. Never in my wildest dreams had I ever imagined of this remarkable day.
As a kid, I was prone to illness and skinnier than most of the kids of my age group. My physiology was definitely not cut out for a demanding job of a soldier. This may lead people to wonder what must have driven this dainty, delicate girl to embark such courageous task. As my junior year was coming to an end, I started exploring my options after High School and beyond only to find out that college expenses was beyond my reach.
When I revealed this shocking news to my parents my dad, a humble store cashier retorted bluntly that I was on my own and that they did not have the monetary capacity to contribute to my education. Baffled and disappointed by his remark, I started hunting for a source to provide for my college expenses. On the quest of doing so, I bumped into a Texas Army National Guard Recruiter who introduced me to this larger than life organization. He told me that the Army is a key component of the U. S.
Armed Forces, providing expeditionary land forces wherever and whenever they are required. And that I could contribute when called upon to serve our country and at the came time get my education paid for. This was just what I needed; an opportunity to defend my country and go to college. But this was no ordinary club. Little did I know this would be the most daunting and life changing experience of my life. My parents have always morally supported me because of my zeal to aspire towards a career, look forward to graduation and beyond and completion of a degree to foster a sense of independence, responsibility and equity.
My parents said no to joining the army without thinking twice... I told them that the idea of women in combat is not unusual anymore and that they are able to hold combat and combat support positions easily because although physical strength matters, the military needs the intelligence that women possess. Women account for only 10 % of the enlisted personnel (Time, 8 / 21 / 95, Pg. 31); but they are still a crucial aspect of the organization. Their outstanding performance has generated the Congress and the public support for enhancing the role of the females in the military.
After giving few of examples like; in the Persian Gulf War women were sent to the mid East to fly helicopters, service combat jets, refuel tanks, and load laser guided bombs; my parents hesitantly agreed. I concluded by saying that the reason to exclude the women from the military was non-existant. After that a few formalities on March 03, 2005 I swore in to be a part of the best Defense System in the world, The US Army. My nine weeks journey from a civilian to a self-disciplined soldier was very demanding, physically as well as mentally.
Throughout high school I had not been involved in any sports so I was skeptical about passing the physical part of the test that evaluated 2 minutes pushups, 2 minutes sit ups and 2 mile run. But I was determined to overcome any obstacle in my way to achieve this goal. So I immediately set to work, working out, burning some calories and running almost every day. Upon completion of the Basic Combat Training I was able to demonstrate general knowledge of military organization and culture, mastery of combat skills, marksmanship, first aid, and achievement of minimal physical conditioning standards. But first and foremost, I learnt the significance of brotherhood and team effort that is the core foundation of this organization. I was taught never leave a fallen comrade.
Living up to the army values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage soon became my second nature. From then on I live them every day in everything I do. I probably would not have the right answer if at that time I was to tell you why I had made a decision to join the US Army, but today I know exactly why. I became a part of the worlds best fighting force because I am committed to serve the American freedom, defend the US Constitution and preserve peace.
This kind of commitment makes each and every one of us the embodiment of selfless service. I had walked in with fright walked away with pride.
