In one study the average adult surmised that teens amount for forty-three percent of all violent crimes, when in reality the number is only a mere thirteen percent, and this number is made up of only half a percent of minors. (Stoup, Page 1) Teenagers should not be forced to follow a ridged time schedule because of a curfew. Curfews severely reduce the amount of time that minors have to do things like youth events or church groups. Some people believe that youth are inexperienced drivers that cause accidents and that a curfew would limit these accidents. Think about that for a moment removing teenagers from the road would reduce accidents but Wouldnt Removing People aged thirty-forty also reduce traffic accidents does that mean that they are inexperienced drivers. Curfews are a quick to a much bigger problem youth are not the only ones committing crimes. Others will wish to participate in activities such as church groups, youth clubs or school trips. Requiring adults always to take them to and from such activities is unreasonable and will ensure that many never take place in the first place, either because adults are unwilling, or are unable to do so. Youth are not the only ones who commit crimes a large amount of crimes are caused by adults. The crimes usually caused by youth are petty crimes like vandalism where as adults are more likely to cause larger problems that the attention of police should be directed to.
While petty crimes should not be completely ignored other crimes should be monitored more closely such as murder. Which would you rather have a guy who could kill someone or a kid with a can of spray paint? Another major argument that supports the enforcement of curfew laws is that it reduces the amount of traffic accidents, as minors are inexperienced drivers (Stoup Page 1) If you think about it everybody was an inexperienced driver at one time or another and the only way these inexperienced drivers get better is to drive and a curfew limits the time that they can learn and then the cant become experienced drivers. So if youre going to judge someone on their driving ability think what you had to go through to get the experience to become a better driver?
Was it from being stuck at home? I do not think so. In a perfect society, there would be no need for curfews because there would be no crime. The only problem with perfection is that it is an imperfect solution to problems. In some cases, applying a curfew has actually increased juvenile crime rates. Teens begin to associate police officers with the curfew, and police officers begin to see any minor that is in violation of the curfew as a criminal.
This tension may lead to crimes being committed by those who may not normally break laws. (Stoup, Page 2) Limiting minors to a specific time should not be done because this can cause some teens to lash out at figures of authority. Teens should not be labeled as bad drivers or delinquents. Being limited to not participate in events after a certain time because a curfew says so is not fair. What if a teenager has a job? Should not be allowed to work because someone else says so?
