The acceptance of gay marriages continues to vary throughout the world. While many areas continue to persecute the concept of homosexual unions, others have grown to accept it. In some countries, such as Singapore and India, any form of homosexual unions or practices is punishable by a jail-term sentence of two years and ten years, respectively. However, in many countries, particularly the United States, have made same-sex marriages legal, or are striving to make it legal throughout their nations.
In the United States, same-sex civil unions are recognized only in only a handful of states. This is gradually changing over time, as more and more protestors and activists continue to fight for the same marriage rights as heterosexuals. The greatest question, however, is to the sole reason as to why homosexual marriages should be declared illegal or nonexistent. One must consider the points of any marriage without bias. Perhaps, it is true that the majority of the population looks down upon homosexuality, but the rights of a human being to marry should not necessarily be restricted to male and female persons merely because others find it to be distasteful. To marry two persons under a specific religion, however, is a separate issue.
It is the secular, impartial perspective that one must take to analyze the concept of the legality of same-sex unions, as two persons can be married under state law without the need for religious intervention. Under the United States, a citizen bears the freedom of religion, or freedom from religion, as well as freedom of expression. Granted there are neither life-threatening outcomes to homosexuality, nor illicit reason to prohibit its expression, why should a homosexual couple not be permitted to receive the same benefits of marriage, as would a heterosexual couple? Personally, I am rather indifferent to the concept of gay marriages. While I do not fully advocate it, I also do not denounce its existence. From a non-religious perspective, I believe that if two persons of the same sex desire to join in the union of marriage, they should be given the opportunity.
I do not believe that sanctity in marriage exists anymore, as persons can be married by their state, rather than under their church, and this should not be used as support to civil union laws. To say that these unions should be restricted to solely male and female persons would be a contradiction to the disparity between religion and the government. While marriage is probably derived from religious or spiritual means, this does not mean that it is open to different, secular interpretations.
