I would like to work in the field of automotive engineering and designing. This career is basically taking an automobile idea and formatting it on to paper or computer programs. After this, a person would figure out all the stress factors, weight, torsion, and make sure this design on paper will work structurally. This career has my interest because I like to draw cars that would be more efficient, more powerful, and more durable than the average car driven today. I think my natural talent and interest in the field of design is enough reason for this to be a good carrier choice for me. I learned through this essay that I could not expect to get hired just because I can draw cars.
There is much more to this field. Businesses and corporations that hire designers are looking for a much more In-depth knowledge of Mechanical Engineering fundamentals and applications. They are looking for skills in computer programming such as advanced 3 D modeling skills in SolidWorks, Pro/E, or SDRC Ideas. They want experienced personnel in the ability to create complicated surfacing, designing plastic parts, performing finite element analysis, product design, and machine design. As I tried to research how to get the experience or schooling for these skills, I learned that there isnt a lot of teaching available for these skills. One college in England has a course that seemed to cover some of the areas in automobile engineering.
The lectures in this class include; load cases, load factors, vehicle structure types, bending, torsion, longitudinal, lateral loads, dynamic factors, basics of simple structural surfaces, bending moment, shear force diagrams, floor grillage's, panels, two plane shear, bending, combined bending, torsion load cases and effects of suspension types on structure loads. There are several local colleges that offer classes to understand some of the basic CAD programs and even the study of Physics play a very high role in the process of engineering. However, even with all the scholastic training, most employers are looking for experience. After a person achieves all the practical learning, it all has to be applied to the specific function of engineering and designing automobiles. Most of what the employers want to see is not how much a person may know about aerodynamics, differing qualities and strengths of alloys, plastics and metals, but how he has learned to apply all this into a solid, workable product. Probably the best plan to go after this career would be to take all the related classes that an auto designer needs to successfully design cars, then start working at sharpening some skills that use the same principles, like a machine shop.
As the science of the work gets polished up one can then start a focused process to squeeze his way into the automobile industry. With a little persistence one can eventually get the dream job of designing automobiles for the future.
