Lets be honest, does it really matter what race you are? I mean does it really matter where you come from? The color of your skin, the culture and value you carry. Unless you are oppressing one race to feel good about yourself, Why should race matter. The fact is, It shouldnt matter as long as you are honest and is respectful to others. Im sure that some of us have experienced this to some extent: When you make a friend who is from a different race, do you still classify him or her as black, white, tall or short, Fat or skinny, someone with long hair or short, Or someone with no legs on a wheel chair, Old or young?
No! You dont, although you might think of these every now and than, you dont constantly think about these things. If someone constantly thinks about them, for me it means that there is something I dislike about it, and in either case I would probably end the relation anyway. It is for this exact reason that I dont believe that race should not play a huge role, if any, in our society. When the Government Census is surveying Americans, although this is not the intention of the survey, its definitely not doing me the favor of having to categorizing me race. Many assumption and problems can arise from categorizing society by race, such as stereotyping, obstacles to job qualification and disruptions of peace in society.
I realize the need for differentiation and diversity; after all it is what makes each and one us very unique and fascinating. However, Im not suggesting that we should all fall for the melting pot ideology either, But simply to have an open mind and see our selves as an American, and not categorize each other for any reason. For instance, if something is forgotten we wouldnt think about it right! Discrimination works somewhat the same way; if the issue of race is constantly being raised as factor to everything we do in society, then people will instinctual differentiate or learn to discriminate against one another. Since discrimination is something taught or experienced and not inherited, society can learn to avoid stereotyping and discrimination among each other- by letting go of old ideals and mythology.
For instance, when I came to America years ago. I could go anywhere and talk to anyone I pleased in the whole city. However, as time pass by, I learned that not all people were in the same mindset as I was. I farther learned that my race, being black, was the most unwelcome in America. This was a huge blow, all hopes and dreams I ever had flashed right before my eyes. Although, I realize that racism and stereotypes are time-bound to these problems, I do believe though by eliminating race as a category in our society we can speed up the process.
Having eliminated the idea of race as a category, we can then achieve a higher ground for living together in harmony. I know this might sound clichd but this ideology is needed in our society. If each of us can learn to avoid hatred and stereotypes in our society, we can then have a joyful of family, friends, and neighbors. Another example from my personal experience is: whenever someone mentions the word race many things comes to mind, usually unpleasant and dreadful memories; because the word race is negatively correlated with the black race most of the times. I say this because black were the first to experience the full meaning of racism in America; Therefore we need to find a way to live in peace and harmony.
One way we could do that is by eliminating race as a category. Finally, after achieving the goals of peace and respect for one another, we can then move on to build a better future. By eliminating race as a factor to job qualification, we can have better people living and working together. Everyday, we see people complain about being discriminated and stereotyped because of their race. For instance, The Government census provide statistic of who is educated and who is not. This doesnt help people such as my self when I applying for job, because the Census categorizes the majority of black as uneducated.
The census is sending indirect and misleading facts about my educational background among other things, even if I check the college education box. Therefore, we shouldnt consider race as a factor, because some people might make assumptions about other and me who are in the same category- who might actually have college-education. For these any many reasons, Government census should not force people in choosing a category of their race. Because categorizing people into racial category will and can always lead us to think that for instance all black people are the same. Although, Im too young to comprehend the full idea behind why race shouldnt play a role in our society, I really do believe that having gold skin is no better than white skin.
