To be betrayed by ones own kin is unforgivable and one must get revenge. (Based) In William Shakespeare's, Hamlet, and the theme of betrayals is most apparent. One betrayal causes an entire family to fall. Betrayal, in hamlet is as thick as the fog on the coast of Denmark, but it eventually clears up; three characters portray forms of betrayal, Ophelia, Gertrude, and Hamlet himself shows the means of betrayal. The men in Ophelia's life betray her, which leads to her death.

Polonius: I have a daughter (have while she is mine) / Who in her duty and obedience mark, / Hath given me this. (Act 2 Scene 2 Line 106). Polonius forces his daughter to give him the love letters which Hamlet sent her. Which makes Hamlet think she betrayed him. But in reality Polonius betrays his daughter by making her give him Hamlets words and thoughts of love. Hamlet: I loved you not. (Act 3 Scene 1 line 120). Hamlet leads Ophelia to believe that he had never loved her, when in reality he did love her.

He covers up his feelings for her and acts like he hates her; but he shows his love for her after her death. Doctor: As we have warranty. Her death was doubtful. (act 5 Scene 1 line 230). The priest believes that she committed suicide and that she should not receive the proper burial rights. The death of her father and Hamlet leaving was too much for Ophelias heart and she went mad, not knowing what to do when she slipped into the brook she drowned. My thoughts are that she did not commit suicide but I would of if I was in her position.

Betrayal is apparent also in Gertrude life, she was betrayed and she also betrayed the men in her life. Gertrude marries Claudius. (act 2 Scene 1). The widowed queen marries Claudius, her dead husbands brother. When she married him she did not know that he was responsible for the death of her late husband. She was sleeping with him and to people know a day its considered incest but then it was what nobles did if they were supportively in love.

Hamlet: Mother, you have my father much afforded. (Act 3 Scene 4 line 11). She betrayed her husband by making a promise; which she did not keep. She married his brother instead of staying alone the rest of her life. Hamlet knowing this; later tells his mother how his father was murdered and she was horrified to know that her new husband had done it to get the crown and her.

King[aside]: it is the poisoned cup. It is too late. (act 5 scene 2 line 298). The queen drinks from a poison cup that Claudius poisoned for Hamlet. The queen not knowing this and trusts her husband would not try to kill her son takes a drink of it and the trust she had for him leads her to her death. Bibliography:
