The Literary Success of John Grisham John Grisham is a fantastic novelist writer. He was born on February 8, 1955 in Jonesboro, Arkansas, home of President Bill Clinton. He was the son of a construction worker and a homemaker. Grisham married Renee Jone who he has had two children with, Ty and Shea.

He received his Bachelors degree from Mississippi State and his Journalist degree from the University of Mississippi. Besides being a novel writer, John Grisham's career started as a lawyer in private practice in South haven, Mississippi from 1981 - 1990. He served in the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1984 - 1990. The effects of John Grisham's life are reflected in his style and writings such as The Partner. While working in the state legislature, Grisham continued to run his law office. His first book, A Time to Kill, was inspired by a scene he saw one day in court in which a preadolescent girl testified against her rapist.

For example, " I never felt such emotion and human drama in my life, I became obsessed wondering what it would be like if the girls father killed that rapist and was put on trial. I had to write it down" [Grisham 152 ]. He felt real intense about this court episode and must have been bored to think up this plot. This quote shows how the effects of his life are shown in his work. In addition, "For The Firm Grisham decided to follow a Writers Digest article for plotting a suspense novel.

Grisham was not as motivated when writing The Firm as he had been when composing A Time to Kill, but with his wifes encouragement he finished the book" [Grisham 153 ]. Writing this novel was not as enjoyable as writing A Time to Kill, so without any encouragement he might have sold it to a bidder. Even though he did not enjoy writing The Firm, he was dedicated to his work. These examples have shown John Grisham's first writings and what inspires him.

Everyone of John Grisham's novels has something to do with a trial. For example, "The Camber is about a lawyer and a clients relationship, The Firm is a story about a corrupt Memphis based law firm, The Pelican Brief is about a law student who trys to prove two murders, and The Client is about a little boy who learns about a murder, who turns to a lawyer for protection, all in which contain trials about each case of convictions" [Grisham 152 - 154 ]. The Chamber, The Firm, The Pelican Brief, and The Client all have trial based plots. All of these novels are based on lawyers and clients in trials who have a special relationships. Compared to other authors, John Grisham's style is very unique. In addition, "In the novels that made him a publishing superstar, John Grisham pitted underdog protagonists against powerful and corrupt organizations, then ruthlessly wound the screws of these confrontations tighter and tighter" [Grisham S 03 ].

The underdog protagonists in The Rainmaker are the boy with Leukemia and his mom and the powerful corrupt organization is the insurance company that wont give them money. The little people in Grisham's novels always win and come out on top. The Partner reflects many of the events that take place in Grisham's life. For example, "After reading The Partner you will be up to date on, among other things, bugging devices, how to fake your death, change your identity, track fugitives, and beat raps through legal ruses" [Grisham 516 ].

This means one will understand the material better after reading this book. This shows that Grisham knows about all these gimmicks. In addition "Mr. Grisham nonetheless too often lets his research dominate the story" [Grisham 516 ]. This means that his books are very complex due to the amount of research he puts into it. Grisham puts a lot of work and dedication into his novels.

According to many Grisham does not develop characters well, but he did a good job with the "smarmy protagonist" of The Partner. Since the beginning, Grisham has tackled issues, taken sides, and pointed fingers. He has written about racial injustice, childrens rights, homelessness, and the death penalty. As John Grisham matures as a writer, his story telling improves.

The fact that Grisham was a lawyer in his early days affects the plot of his stories. His writing is so interesting because of his knowledge of the law. Even though his writings are so great now he received a "D" in English Composition in Highschool. One of his most recent writings was The Street Lawyer. John Grisham's most recent novel, which was released on February 2, 1999, was The Testament. Bibliography: Works Cited 1.
