The Book of Job is considered one of the greatest pieces of literature from the Old World. This book tells the story of Job's life. Job, one of God's most loyal followers, suffers great losses during his life. This story tries to answer the question of why those who believe in and obey God suffer.

Job was very blessed by God. He had ten children, thousands of animals, and many servants. God was extremely proud of Job because Job was one of his most loyal followers. Satan challenges God to test Job's faith to see if he will curse God when all he owns is taken from him.

God accepts Satan's challenge and put Job's belongings in Satan's hands. In one single day Job loses his children, all of his animals, and all of his servants. When Job hears the news of his loses, he does not curse God as Satan foresaw, but falls to his knees and blesses the Lord. God, very pleased with his servant Job, is challenged again by Satan. Satan tells God that Job would curse him if he were riddled with diseases. God allows Satan to inflict sores upon Job's body as long as it does not kill him.

Job accepts these loses and curses and still does not curse the Lord. Job's friends come to offer their sympathies. They tell him that God would surely forgive Job if he would confess his sin and repent. Job insists that he is innocent of any wrong-doing. His friends do not believe him and finally Job becomes angry. Job questions God and asks why God would punish him seeing as he was always the faithful servant.

God speaks to Job in a whirlwind. Instead of answering Job's questions, God asks his own questions of Job. God asks Job to explain where he was when the universe was created. He asks Job to explain about the oceans and the land, the snow and the rain, and the animals, their birth and their deaths.

God asks Job about Job's power and strength. Job realizes that he was wrong to question God, who can do all things. Job repents for speaking out in ignorance. In this story, one sees that God allows our faith to be tested, not so He can see the depth of our faith, but so we can determine the depths of our own faith. Who are we to determine who should suffer and who should not? Only God in his power can know such things.

Our job on earth is not to question God but to praise him in all situations. Bibliography:
