When I first chose to do this project I thought I wasnt going to have enough data, but now I realize I have to much. I did free throw percentage vs. three point percentage because I wanted to find out if a person shot good from the foul line, does that mean they would shoot well from the three point line. I felt it was an interesting project for me pursue because I cant shoot free throws well, but Im pretty good from behind the arc. I picked to common spots on the basketball floor because these are the spots people usually shoot the ball well from. A foul shot is by far an easier shot to shoot than a three pointer, but some people have more problems shooting free throws than a three pointer.
Foul shots take a little more concentration, and people usually dont jump when shooting a free throw either. Collecting the data was the best part of the project. Since Im in the gym all day everyday I figured why not do somthing that involved basketball. I used five players from the varsity boys basketball team, Craig Thomas, Robert Disco, Nick Faa's, Emilio Martinez, and Sal Cammorota.
All of these guys shot the free throws exceptionally well, but it was the three pointers in which they had trouble, which is common. I think they all had fun taking the survey, it made them concentrate on the shots that they were taking. When I calculated all of the shots up from the data I collected I found that in certain cases a better free throw percentage equaled a better three point percentage. Some of the shooters would shoot bad from the free throw line and shoot fairly well from the three point line.
I guess it depended on the person shooting the ball, but overall a better free throw percentage equaled a better three point. I found that on certain days my data supported my hypothesis, because some days the shooters would shoot fair from the free throw line and fair from the three point line. Overall the data did support the hypothesis that I was tryin to support. If I had to do it all over again I would probably add more spots to shoot from instead of just a three point shot and a foul shot. Bibliography:
