Can anyone give me a reason why marijuana is illegal? What about marijuana is so different than any other drug out there? Is there even a difference? Let's take a look.

Marijuana is a drug obtained from dried and crumpled parts of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa. Smoked by rolling in tobacco paper or placing in a pipe. It is also otherwise consumed worldwide by an estimated 200, 000, 000 people for pleasure, an escape from reality, health purposes, or relaxation. Marijuana is not a narcotic and is not a mentally or physically addicting drug. You can use marijuana mildly without it giving you physical or mental problems; and only once in a while it will produce actual hallucinations. Some people who smoke marijuana feel no effects; others feel relaxed and sociable, tending to laugh a great deal, and have a profound loss of time.

Those under the influence of marijuana show bad coordination and an impaired ability to perform skilled acts. Although marijuana is not addicting, it may be habituating. Which means an individual may become psychologically addicted rather than physically dependent on the drug. given to us in the Constitution.

A person who smokes at home is not doing injury. The marijuana user is basking in a minor pleasure that the government should have no jurisdiction over. It is clear from survey data that most people do not become physically dependent on marijuana. The same majority of people use it, as others drink alcohol; to occasionally relax, and to get into a happy mood. How can a very mild drug, most of the time taken less than once a day, be seen as a public threat?

Even those who are "hooked", on their habit, should not be penalized by the law. Some people find any compulsive and non-productive behavior disgusting. But that is not a reason for outlawing it; picking your nose is a disgusting habit and that's not outlawed. Consider eating, many people develop compulsive habits about food.

They talk about it, eat it, think about it constantly. This may be unattractive and it certainly is not productive and it can be harmful if the "food addict" is over weight, but there are no laws to prevent food addiction. If Congress tried to ban the eating of ice cream sundaes or cotton candy, many people would be angry, others would just simply laugh. People with respect of marijuana raise the same argument. The attempt to use the law to tell people what they may and may not consume in their own home is an invasion of privacy. Long term and heavy use of this drug, like any other drugs, does some wear and tear on the body.

Now when Congress uses the excuse that they have to protect the drug user from him self, the argument has two sides. One has to do with the damage a drug may do to a person's health and the other deals with the user's power of self-control or freedom. First consider the health effects. By any reasonable standard, marijuana is a mild drug and as for using too much or overdosing, there is no evidence of anyone dying of an overdose of marijuana smoke. Of course, it is possible to commit suicide by consuming large amounts of marijuana, but it is also possible to die by eating too much salt. Salt is not illegal.

Many people overdose on aspirin and that's legal. Many people die by drinking too much alcohol, which is an addictive drug, but guess what, there is a liquor store on almost every corner. Why is marijuana considered more dangerous? Studies have shown that marijuana, in most cases, does increase clumsiness. And while under the influence of marijuana you should not drive heavy machinery, which includes cars or planes. But, studies have shown that 55 % of accidents are caused by alcohol.

I must say again that alcohol is legal. Marijuana may present similar risks, but it is not positively known. {"Why Marijuana" pg. 56 - 57 } I would agree in having the same laws against driving under the influence of marijuana similar to those driving under the influence of alcohol. Can anyone really give a reasonable excuse why the use of marijuana is illegal and the use of alcohol is? All of the facts are on the table, and if you take a long hard look at them it does not make any sense. Maybe sooner or later Congress with finally get their heads out of the sky and look at the facts and do what is right. Alcohol vs.

Marijuana 1: Over 100 thousand deaths annually are directly linked to acute alcohol poisoning. 2: In 4, 000 years of recorded history, no one has ever died from a pot overdose. 3: Alcohol causes Server physical and psychology dependence. 4: Alcohol is reported to cause temporary and permanent damage to all major organs of the body. 5: Cannabis is a much less violent provoking substance than alcohol. With all of the people using marijuana, Congress and Lawmakers should treat it no differently that alcohol. {"Why Marijuana" pg. 78 } Bibliography:
