... st takes what comes to him. Why didnt Crooks stand up for himself? Crooks loneliness is making him self-conscious, almost to the point where all he does is apologize.

Crooks loneliness has only sent him further and further from the amiability of anybody on the ranch but himself. Living a isolated life is the result of such loneliness. Living without the common necessities of life can only result in destruction of oneself from the inside. With no one to talk to and no one to relate to, Crooks has isolated himself from the rest of the people on the ranch.

Crooks feels as if his loneliness is a disease. A disease in which has consumed him and will be the death of him. Curley's wife is the quintessence of loneliness in this novel. Throughout the novel, Curley's wife is referred to as Curley's wife and nothing else. As you read further, you begin to build a picture inside within your mind, one that shows Curley's wife as being nothing but a lonely, desperate woman.

This shows us the true nature of her character, labeling her as Curley's wife. Steinbecks genius creates a character in a way that no words can, by not giving her a name. Curley's wife really has no character, her loneliness and desperation eats away at her real personality. She has become Curley's wife through years of loneliness and solitude. Sure I gotta human, you all seen him.

Swell guy, aint he? Spends all his time sayin what hes gonna do to guys he dont like, and he dont like nobody. Think Im gonna stay in that two-by-four house and listen how Curley's gonna lead with his left twice, and then bring in the ol right cross? Curley's wife doesnt want to stay in her small house and listen to what her pugnacious husband wants to do. She needs to voice her opinion as well. Expressing oneself is a need, one that will help you cope with the problems.

If her husband will not talk to her, she needs to find someone that will. Instead of waiting for her husband to come home, she runs around looking him. She will only see Curley once he has completed his day at work; and that is too long for her to go without talking to someone. Generally, she is trying to find someone to talk to. Loneliness is plaguing Curley's wife so much that walks around all day just looking for conversation.

Curley's wife is a lonely soul; she has no one to talk to and no one to share her happiness with. She makes an earnest attempt at starting up conversation. She does not like to stay in her tiny house all day; she wants to get out and talk, thats how lonely she is. Well, I aint giving you no trouble. Think I dont like to talk to somebody ever once in a while? Think I like to stick in that house alla time?

Making trouble on the ranch is what Curley's wife does best. She also makes trouble with almost all of the men on the ranch. The men on the ranch say shes has the eye. Well she got the eye. I seen her give Slim the eye. I seen her give Slim the eye.

Curley never seen it. An I seen her give Carlson the eye. Curley's wife tries to entice conversation by using her looks. Giving men the eye might get her someone to talk to. She would have no one to talk to if she just stayed inside her house all day. It is for this that she leaves and makes trouble with the men.

She is so lonely that she goes out at starts something with other people so she can have someone to talk to. Isolation she does not like, and isolation she avoids. But as she says, all she wants to do is talk. I get lonely, you can talk to people but I cant talk to nobody but Curley.

Else he gets mad. Howd you like not to talk to anybody? Curley's wife has a dream, one that which will never come true. She wants to be an actress. After having met someone who told her it was possible she has become obsessed with it. She met a man who told her that he worked in Hollywood.

This man said that he would get her some work as an actress as soon as he got back to Hollywood. A letter would come and explain all she could do so that her dream would come true. However, he didnt write, he wasnt associated with any Hollywood in anyway. Nevertheless she is not complacent; she still thinks of herself as a good actress and still thinks that she could have made it. Nother time I met a guy, an he was in pitcher. He says he was gonna put me in the movies.

Says I was a natural. Soon's he got back to Hollywood he was gonna write me about it. I never did get that letter. Loneliness has consumed her so much that she still holds onto this dream of becoming an actress. Needing something to hold on to, she grasps the idea of her as an actress. She knows that it will never come true, but she wants to hold on to an idea, a dream.

Curley's wife is void, she is nothing and she has nothing to gain. Causing tribulation and trouble throughout the novel point out that, Curley's wifes purpose is a metaphor. Sequestered is no way to go throughout life. Being isolated and desperate can lead to outlandish actions. Ultimately the result of Curley's wife is death. Dying due to the result of her needing to feel something that she could not give herself: compassion and love.

The hardships of isolation and loneliness are not problems dealt with my many people. Crooks and Curley's wife were, among others, casualties of a disease seen my most everyone at least once in their live. Overcoming and defeating the depression and aggravation that come associated with the disease can be cured. Friendship, compassion, love, not always the answer but it cant do anything but help. And so I leave with this question Is life worth living if you have no one to share it with? Bibliography:
