Lyndon Baines Johnson the 36 th President of the United States was born near Stonewall, Texas in 1908. He was the eldest of five children. His father had served on the Texas legislature five times. Although Johnson shared his father s interest in politics he went to college and began working on a school teaching career.
He graduated with a degree in history and went on to teach at a high school in Houston. After two years he became interested in a political position and took the job of private secretary to Congressman Richard Kleberg of Corpus Christi. In 1934 Johnson married Claudia Alta Taylor, a graduate from the University of Texas. The couple had two daughters. Three years later a Congressman of central Texas died and an election was held to replace him. Johnson decided to run and won by a large margin.
During World War 2 Johnson s main concern was national defense. He constructed a naval training station in Corpus Christi and a Naval Reserve installation at Dallas. For the 1940 election he was in charge of the national campaign to keep the House of Representatives, Democratic. In 1941 one of the Texas senators died and Johnson stepped in to fill the position, but he lost to Governor Lee O Daniel. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor Johnson joined the Naval Reserve and survived two nearly fatal airplane crashes while stationed in New Guinea.
In 1948 he was once again elected Senator. When the Korean War broke out Johnson fully supported the government s involvement. He was again elected in 1954 as a Senator. He campaigned through many states promoting his politics of responsibility policy.
In 1955 he suffered a massive heart attack, and nearly lost his life. After six months he had recovered and began working just as hard in spite of doctor s protest. As a Senator he helped to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1957 in Senate. In 1960 Johnson was nominated as a candidate for President for the Democratic National Convention. Senator John Kennedy of Massachusetts won and offered Johnson the position of Vice-President, which he accepted. Possibly due to Johnson s campaigning in the south John Kennedy won the presidential election of 1960.
As Vice-President Johnson took interest in the space program and moved its headquarters to Houston. On November 21, 1963 President John Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. On the way back to Washington Johnson was sworn in aboard Air Force One. Johnson spoke to Congress and assured him that he would carry out Kennedy s foreign and domestic policies.
Johnson was known for his large spending programs. When he projected a budget for spending many people doubted his efforts would succeed. In his State of the Union address he announced his new plan for war on poverty and a reorganization of spending in the communities. In the first three months Johnson saw the Civil Rights bill pass the House and his tax cut bill through the Senate.
In February he proposed a program called Medicare. In the matter of foreign policies Johnson made great efforts to improve relations between the United States and the USSR; he increased trade, cultural, and economic exchange programs. Johnson was also determined to see that the Vietnam War did not fail. In 1967 Johnson announced that Tet Offensive, a series of attacks on South Vietnam. For the election of 1968 Johnson announced that he would not be running for a second term. Before leaving office he called for a halt in the bombing of North Vietnam as a gesture for peace.
The response of North Vietnam began with peace talks in Paris later that week. After the election of Richard Nixon Johnson returned to his ranch in Texas to begin writing his Presidential memoirs. Johnson died in 1973 and was buried at his ranch in Johnson City, Texas.
