Born To Lose Victory is one of the hardest things for one to achieve in life, it is not only getting what you want, but doing it by overcoming an obstacle. When one is victorious everything they receive what they were fighting for. Most of the time people are able to archive partial victory but end up being a victim. When someone is a victim they don?
t get what they want and are subjected to some kind of torment. Victims compose most of the world weather one is a victim emotionally, socially, or physically. In Tennessee Williams? A Streetcar Named Desire? Mitch, Stanley, Stella and Blanch are all partial victors but in the end there are no victors only victims. Mitch does not want much in his life other then getting married would be a big victory in his life.
Mitch? s mother is dying and her last wish is to see her son Mitch married, so that when she dies, her son is taken care of. This is a hard for Mitch to do because he has many things going against him in trying to get a wife. He is already a middle-aged man, this means there is a lack of women for him to marry.
Most of the women who were not married at this age were not? marriage material? . He also does not have experience in dating so it is hard for him to meet people, and when he does he has trouble knowing what to say. Even though he has all of these things going against him, he finds someone to be with. During one of his card games at Stanley? s house he meets Blanch.
They begin to date, even though he lacks experience with women she still likes him. They begin to date and Mitch is ready to ask her to marry him. Mitch looks as though he is going to get what he wants. Even though Mitch seems as though he is going to achieve his goal he ultimately becomes a victim.
Mitch thinks that Blanch is a refined lady with strong morals, when in reality she really has a very shady past. Blanch is able to trick Mitch into believing this by acting a certain way towards him. Saying? Its not the kiss I objected to.
It was the other familiarity that I felt obliged to discourage. Mitch and Blanch go well together and are about to married until Mitch is told of Blanches past. Stanley tells Mitch of Blanches past of prostitution and statutory rape. Mitch at first denies these stories and nobly defends his wife to be. But after checking on Stanley? s accusations him self he learns that the stories are true.
Mitch became a victim of Blanches lies, he lost his last chance to fulfil his mothers wish. In addition to that he also is made a fool in front of his friends because he did not believe Stanley. Even though Mitch came close to achieving his goal he was unable to do it and is a victim. Stanley is a very happy man before the onset of the play. He has a wife that cares for him, and does what he says, as well as a baby on its way. He has achieved his goal and wants in life.
He is a victor until Blanch, comes into his life, she is very irritating. She not only annoys him but also takes Blanch? s attention away from him and onto her. Stella pays less attention to him because she is busy running aron's for her sister Blanch. Stanley? s now wants to do all he can to get Blanch out of the house and to have the life that he had before she came.
Stanley is not able to just kick Blanch out of the house because of the effects it would probably have on his marriage. He does some research on Blanch? s past history to see why she came to live with them and finds out that she was run out of Laurel her old town for having an affair with a 17 year old. With this information Stanley hints at Blanch that he knows about her past to try and make her leave.
This doesn? t work, and the next thing he does to achieve his goal is to break up her chance of marrying Mitch and finally gives her a bus ticket back to the hometown she cant go to. His anger and resentment of Blanch culminates into a rape of her. Finally at the end of play Blanch is shipped off to a crazy house because she claims that Stanley raped her and Stella does not believe this and decides to send her to the crazy house. Stanley is successful in getting rid of Blanch he was able to achieve this goal.
Stanley? s goal was to have the life that he did before Blanch came into the household. Stanley is a victim because by trying so hard to get rid of Blanch he destroys his chances of achieving this goal. The first thing he does to destroy his way of life is his constant cruelty towards Blanch. Stella being her sister does not like it that her husband is being so mean to her sister. The violent outbursts of Stanley to Blanch have made Stella question if he is really a harmless man.
Next he gives Blanch a ticket back to a place that she can? t go again and finally he rapes her the same night his wife is having his child. After Stella is told by Blanch about the rape, and is shipped of to the crazy house, the questions and problems linger behind. Stella lost some of the magic that she felt for Stanley and begins to see a very different side to him. She still stays with him and loves him but something has changed, there would always be a question in her mind weather or not Stanley really raped her sister. Even though Stanley achieved his short-term goal he is a victim of himself in the long run life will never be the same as it was before.
Stella? s goals are all based on helping others, she wants to help Blanch with her problems and make living conditions and tensions with Stanley work. The first thing she does to help her sister is to welcome her into home and tries to see what is wrong with her. Listening and supporting her financially by letting her stay at her house and treating her like she was a very important person is her solution to the problem.
Because of this Stella thinks that she is victorious in her goal. But by letting Blanch stay in her house, she is making Stanley angry. The clash in lifestyles and personalities between Stanley and Blanch lead to tension in the house. Constant verbal attacks from Stanley make Stella? s job of helping Blanch very difficult.
In the end all of the verbal attacks lead to Stanley? s rape of Blanch. This only adds to Blanch? s problems until it is impossible for Stella to help her sister. She was unable to help her and is not victorious in her goal. Stella is a victim of circumstances, she is not the cause of the problems that encompass her life.
She is left with all of these problems that were created by Stanley and Blanch. Although she doesn? t believe that Stanley raped Blanch in the back of her mind there is some doubt. She also sees a different side of Stanley that is not the loving young boy but a violent man. Stella? s is left with all of the problems left behind to take care of.
As well as left with the fact that she did not help her sister, but make her problems even greater then they were before. Blanch has a very hard life and her goal is to try and escape the hardships she faced right before this play takes place. She wants to move on with her life, she does this by running to the one place she could. She comes to Stella? s house and says she is there for a short visit, when she really has no place to go back to. She tries her best to be nice to Stanley and make him like her but it does not work.
Stanley soon catches on to what Blanch? s true intentions are, and of her shady past. Blanch then know that she will be unable to stay in these living conditions forever. Luckily she meets Mitch, who is single and in need of a wife. She jumps on the chance to get married and settle down but those plans get destroyed. To top it off the man who brought the end of her progress also rapes her.
Blanch has become a victim of many different things, brought on by many different people. First she is a victim because of the position that her family members put her in. By leaving her Belle Reeve and all of the financial disorder to take care of. She loses the house and has no where to go.
She decided to become an English teacher to try and support herself. She loses her job when she has an affair with a student who reminded her of dead husband. She is run out of town and flees to Stella? s house.
Thinking she fled all of her problems she feels victorious, but she actually just runs into more problems. She next becomes a victim of Stanley, who finds out about her shady past and ruins her chance at normal life anywhere. Other then just be a victim of Stanley? s knowledge, she is physically a victimized by Stanley when he rapes her too.
In the end the one person who is on Blanch? s side unknowingly victimizes her. After Blanch tells Stella of her rape instead of dealing with the problem, Stella sends Blanch to a crazy house never to return. Blanch is the ultimate victim in this play, she suffers the most out of all the characters. Mitch, Stanley, Stella, and Blanch were all able to overcome their troubles and claim victory temporarily but they fail to have their victory stand the test of time. Weather it was it was Mitch who was victimized by Blanch?
s lies, Stanley who is a victim of himself, Stella who is a victim of the circumstances that everyone put her in, of Blanch who was victimized by many different things. In the end after achieving some of ones goals, there are no victors only victims.
