There are many Smoking QUESTIONING There are many questionable and unclear parts to this particular essay. The first is in the first paragraph it says Yet smoking among young white women is at an all-time high It does not seem necessary to specify race or even gender. The topic is how smoking effects teenagers. Whites, blacks, men, and women are all Americans.

In the same paragraph, the Virginia Slims example is brought up, and is somewhat misleading. It is difficult to gauge how many young women smoke because of an advertisement like that. It seems a teenagers peers would have a greater impact on their behavior and habits, regardless of the glamorous publicity of the advertisements. Later in the essay, the author generalizes that sisterhood and feminine solidarity are used as tools to promote the sales of cigarettes. This is actually somewhat true, and is true of most brands of cigarettes. The target audience for Virginia Slims is women, so the ads will obviously feature women having fun and enjoying life.

In the same way, cigarette brands aimed at men feature rugged cowboys and male models with beautiful women. This sort of thing appeals to men on the same level as the sisterhood and feminine solidarity does to young women. In the next paragraph, the author attempts to further explain the ads for women, and uses a quote from Carol Boyd, the director of the University of Michigan Substance Abuse Research Center. She comments They don t say it s a girl thing; it s a woman thing. It has to do with growing up, being independent. I disagree with this statement, because I believe people start smoking not to be independent, but rather to fit into a certain crowd, and gain greater acceptance.

The essay goes on to further single out women and returns to the topic of race. The author also tries to connect the desire to be thin with smoking, which really does not make sense. Again, the essay strays from the main point, which is why teenagers start smoking, and the tobacco companies trying to trick consumers. ANALYZING The audience chosen for this essay seems to be a somewhat general audience, but older than teenager. An ideal audience would also be non-smokers. The language seems to be directed towards those who agree with the author on the topic of smoking and trick advertising.

The essay does make assumptions, however. It is assumed that all who read this essay are familiar with cigarette advertising and the dangers of smoking. It is also assumed that all teenagers have been properly educated about the dangers of smoking. The evidence presented is fairly convincing. The statistic concerning the first advertising of cigarettes in the 1929 New York s Easter Parade is particularly well used, because it displays how attractive women were used to promote cigarettes even back then. The statistic concerning the percentage of white girls that had smoked in the last month is somewhat biased.

The essay states that the percentage is 40 %, but the type of survey they conducted was unclear. It could have been a survey in one high school in an isolate part of the country, or it could have been a nationwide survey done in all areas of America. Until the type of survey is revealed, the statistic is difficult to interpret. Another percentage used is 30 % of the women in one lecture class smoked as a form of weight control. This statistic is hardly representative of what the actual numbers are.

Whether or not these stats are accurate or not, the stats are relevant. The evidence seems to be a little slanted, because some of the comments and quotes are one-sided. The author quotes a psychologist saying Black girls may associate smoking with things they don t want to be associated with, an image they don t find appealing. Other than the slanted information, the info is fairly convincing.
