As we walked along the beach, we ran and spoke as freely as possible. My sister and I ran about throwing sand at one another's faces and trampled the remnants of what were once sand castles. Our fun was unhindered do to the fact that we were alone, aside from my parents we were the only ones for about a mile on the beach. This seemed quite peculiar because it was a perfectly sunny day. There were no clouds and the sky seemed to be a creamy blue, the sun seemed to warmly soak into our skin, and the gentle breeze seemed to wash away the burn. At the same time the breeze whistled quietly threw the palm trees which when mixed with the sound of the waves and the aroma of the beach was quite intoxicating.
We all seemed to stop our frolicking and ponder the thought of being the only occupants of the beach. We then figured we might as well have fun instead of complaining that we had the beach to ourselves. The only other thing that I noticed peculiar was that the flags all along the sectioned off portion of the beach seemed to change color everyday. oh how pretty. My sister would state in her superficial ways of thinking, but I seemed to figure that there was more to these flags than just decoration. I was lost in my thoughts when it hit me, a handful of sand that is.
I turned around only to scream out my sisters name and proceed to chase her. Therefor forgetting all of my analysis about the flags, which would haunt me later. We are going to get some drinks kids, you guys have fun and stay out of trouble. I heard my parents say, and with that we were off with a dash to the waters edge.
I was content on staying in the shallows and chasing off the fish that I could see through my newly purchased goggles, but on the other hand there was my sister demanding that we swim out past the roped off section of the hotels waters. I tried to refuse her, but at the mention of bringing up past blackmail I decided it would be better to be beaten by the waves rather than my dads belt, so I agreed. We swam out as far as possible without really encountering any waves, then it happened. As we proceeded to swim back in, we realized that we were being pulled under every time a small wave past by us. what the heck I proclaimed in a shaky voice as my head repeatedly bobbed under the surface. My sister started to make fun of me until she said oh shoot! ! !
I turned around to see what I thought was a tsunami coming straight for my head. It was then that I made my biggest mistake. As I had been told in the past to do, I tried to swim under the wave. This was all good until I suddenly realized that I couldnt return to the surface.
Instead, I got dragged along the bottom for what seemed like an eternity. Then just as my head poked up for just a second I gasped for nice and soothing mix of air and warm saltwater. At the same time I grabbed the rope sectioning off the part of the hotels beach. I looked over to my sister in despair for help only to see that she was in her own predicament. She looked fairly occupied so I decided that it would be best to try and get myself out on my own. The next thing I knew, my sister was grappling for my neck and squawking like a shot bird.
I then realized that this would get worse before it got better. My world that I had known for a whole ten and a half years seemed to be defying the very laws of physics as the horizon seemed to be flipping around, and I was seeing plenty of stars despite the fact that it was midday. Eventually the wave subsided and my sister and I dragged our wearily on to the beach. I then saw a shadow cover me, for all I knew and cared it could have been a hurricane. I didnt really seem to mind, I just wanted to sleep. I felt a poke in my side and looked up to see my dad You know you really outta lay out on a blanket, you never now whats on these beaches.
Hen I second shadow appeared and in my moms voice said you know you to really should stay out of the water right now, the black flag means very dangerous undertow. She said, pointing at I sign far off covered in the brush. It read white flag: no undertow, Pink flag some undertow, and so on. At the very bottom it read BLACK FLAG; STAY OUT OF WATER, ENTER AT OWN RISK.
