Video Game Violence The average male spends approximately one and a half hours playing video games every day. There are many mixed feelings on video games. Some people feel that games are violent, and not educational. While others think that they are semi-educational, good for free time activities, and for developing coordination skills. (Dave, 1997) I believe that video games really don t effect teens and children the way the media say they do. Other people say that video games are both fun, and interactive (Dave, 1997). Games are taking entertainment to the next level, and ar becoming more and interactive.
Instead of watching something going on, you yourself are making it happen. With the new levels of interactivity and realism, I think video games will soon be popular among many more ages of people. Video games are also a great thing to play when you have free time. For instance, I play is when I have fifteen minutes and am waiting to go somewhere. Instead of sitting and doing absolutely nothing, I will play a video game when I am bored. Also, video games are great for practicing coordination specifically hand and eye coordination.
Most good athletes play video games because you have to watch the screen, and quickly react to what is happening. This is something that takes a lot of skill. I myself play video games when I have spare time. I play both violent, and non-violent games. Both Quake and Doom are games that I occasionally play. I have no violent thoughts or tendencies toward others.
In some ways, it is better to play a violent video game, and let out your aggression there, rather than do something outrageous like in Columbine. I agree with Brian Geringer when he says that he would rather to beat up a fake virtual person than a real breathing living person. (Geringer, Brian, 1997) While some say that games are pointless, they actually are not. While others say games are a bad, and violent influence, yet young people still have access to violent movies, and watch violent / sexually explicit TV shows (Dave, 1997). Most of the negative remarks on video games concern the amount of violence they contain. Many people are blaming video game violence for the recent school shootings at Colorado, and Arizona. Unfortunately, the students who committed the crimes in Colorado were avid video game players.
They played mostly computer games like Doom, and Quake, which are very bloody and violent games. They also have been recorded saying crude remarks, whenever virtually killing another human opponent. All in all video games are not as much as an influence as a parent can be. If a child knows right from wrong, you shouldnt have to worry about his decisions on any type of act.
There are places without any sort of TV or video game within miles, but they still have senseless killings (Sacobie, Shane, 1999, page 1).
