Water pollution is one of the worlds worst forms of pollution. For example, take a look at a glass of water. It may appear clear, but there are really millions of microscopic pollutants floating in it. Approximately 70 % of the earths surface are covered by water; water is a very dynamic system, any change in its normal content could affect local, regional, and eventually worldwide water. Oil is one of the worlds biggest pollutants; oil is usually spilled or leaked from land or rivers and flows from them to the sea or ocean.

The more direct form of oil pollution is when ships transporting oil leaks or the ship crashes. Oil can also ruin shores it can was up on them and become tar like lumps; some coat fur of animals and can effect their heating system. Also some oil can find its way into other sources causing hazardous water to be consumed. In some extreme cases, rivers, lakes, and wells have been known to ignite. Air pollution is also a worldwide polluter. Air pollution mainly comes from cars and industries.

There are particles called hydrocarbons that settle or are washed down by rain from the air to the ocean. Toxic wastes are probably the most harmful forms of pollutants. A toxic waste can be quickly passed along the food chain and can cause various problems. Toxic wastes come from leakage of landfills, dumps, old mines, and farms.

Sewage and Industrial wastes introduce chemical pollutants like PCB, DDT, and Seven. Dont think that humans have nothing to do with water pollution. You would not believe some of the things found in the ocean. Here are a few examples of trash found in the oceans: 1.

Syringes, with all the various diseases going around that can be passed by needles that is a scary though. 2. Laboratory rats 3. Human stomach lining 4. Navy decontamination kits 5. Test tubes filled with various substances some even with radioactive markings on them. Those are just a few things that are found in the ocean every day.

Can you imagine swimming in the ocean and walking out with any one of those items in your hand? The effect of water pollution depends on the type and amount of contamination, the time of exposure, and what the water was like before the pollution. An estuary is a deep and wide channel to the sea. Estuaries are flushed easily by the seas tide and can cope with more pollution. Some signs of water pollution is some algae may die causing the marine life to starve and move to other streams or lakes there have been many lakes that are now classified as dead lakes. Waste is measured in terms of total flow in gallons per day.

The normal per capita flow of domestic, for a small town would be about 50 gallons per day, and for a large city about 200 gallons per day. In the United States, control over water pollution has come around in the 20 th century. States only in latter years started taking active part in making laws and procedures for water pollution control. The first federal law concerning pollution was the 1899 Rivers and Harbor act, The 1965 Water Quality Act, the 1966 Clean Water Restoration Act, and the 1987 Clean Water Act. The federal government has slowly established criteria for all interstate and coastal waters, and provided for enforcement of laws against pollution.

The 1987 clean water Act allowed twenty billion dollars to help provide states with federal funds for pollution control. The major provisions of this act were nine point six billion dollars in federal grants went to pay fifty five percent of costs to help communities build sewage treatment facilities. Another was eight point four billion dollars in federal grants went for state revolving-loan funds to finance municipal sewage treatment facilities, and two billion dollars for additional programs helping to clean up the nations water supply. Also for the establishment of stricter laws against the use of toxic chemicals and the development of programs to monitor and control water pollution.

The Mississippi River is on of the latest examples in the campaign to clean up the nations water. As Attorney General Janet Reno announced more lawsuits in a series of 142 aimed at stemming the pollution, the U. S. Public Interest Research Group reported almost one billion pounds of toxic chemicals were dumped into the waters of America between 1992 - 1996 including more than five hundred million pounds dumped into the Mississippi.

In the case of local water treatment there are two kinds of sewer systems one is the combined system the other is the separate system. The combined sewer system carries water polluted by human use and storm water polluted as it drains of homeland and streets. In separate systems sanitary sewers carry only sewage, while storm sewers carry the large volumes of storm runoff water. During dry weather when combined sewers are handling only the normal amount of wastewater all of it goes to the waste treatment plant. But when there is a storm combined sewers have to carry a much larger amounts of water, parts of the water including amounts of raw sewage bypass the treatment plant and go into streams. In this case the process of dilution is depend to minimize pollution but is highly undesirable.

Water pollution research is going in many different ways, including the search for a more efficient way to remove oxygen demanding contaminates from the polluted water surface. Things you can do to help prevent or slow down water pollution. Use treatment of wastewater to make water reusable and of high quality. To enforce government regulations prohibiting and limiting pollution of water and to develop practices and techniques that will prevent or limit the natural runoff of pollutants.

Maintain systems to declare areas to minimize litter and algae. Clean up small-scale oil spills witch threaten the waterways, and help other services to clean up hazardous chemical spills by providing advice or materials. Use a land planning processes to prevent high-risk activities from establishing close to high valued waterways. Identify locations to control and prevent pollution problems. Maintain routine watches of the waterways and catchment activities that may pollute waterways. Monitor water qualities, and maintain surveillance of industrial activities and follow up complaints and concerns by the community.

If we as people do not start taking care of our earths water it may run out due to all of the pollution, so next time you think of dumping something into a river or stream think of what you are doing and who or what it can hurt.
