After Schindlers List SCHINDLERS LIST After watching the lengthy but stunning story of the Holocaust and the needless discrimination and extermination of the Jewish race, I had many immediate emotional responses during and after completing a movie that was rather hard to sit through, but which has now become my favorite movie. What strikes me most is the loss of innocence, such as the girl in the red coat. When her color was first shown in was in the ghetto and she was walking through the streets, not bothering anybody. She actually seemed happy and care-free, however, Oscar knew what was in for her and he despaired to think of what would happen to her. To him she represents the entire Jewish race, she represents a people that have done nothing to harm anyone.
And then later, when Schindler sees her for the second time on a wheel barrow, being brought to the conveyed belt which leads to a mass of burning Jewish corpses, he realizes that if nothing is done to prevent this needless loss of innocence, the entire Jewish race will be wiped out from the face of the planet. At this point in the movie we begin to see how Oscar Schindler's attitude towards what is going on changes. At first he is simply a Nazi who wants to take advantage of war. He is seeking to make a fortune and as he says in the movie, war is all he needs to prosper. His factory at first his money maker which provides the army with pots and pans and which becomes one of the most efficient factories in all of Europe. However, from the time that he sees the girl in the red coat his feelings change and the needless killings along with the horrible treatment the Jews receive motivates him to take action and prevent the deaths of some of the Jews.
Towards the second half of the film he becomes determined to save hundreds of innocent lives. To the Jews, Oscar is a God and his factory is viewed as a haven where Jews are treated well and can seek refuge. With the help of his assistant, he makes a list of over eight hundred Jews which he needs for his factory. The German Army has a great need for the supplies he provides and therefore they allow the Jews to work in the factory. At the end of the movie we se how Schindler's mission has entirely changed from using the previously wealthy Jews money to fund his factory, to make money for him. He know is simply trying to save as many Jews as he can.
He states Why did I hold on to this car. this this is ten people right here. And then he goes on to explain how a pin he had could have save two people from the terrifying, burning stacks of concentration camps situated all across Europe which the Jews had no chance to survive in. Furthermore, towards the end of the movie we see in the factory how Oscar is completely against war for he produces shells that malfunction and simply dont work. At the start of the film, Schindler wants to make a fortune through war having the Jews serve as his work force. But at the end he spends all his money on saving the Jews and bringing them to a place where they are safe from gas chambers and firing squads.
Schindler was definitely a righteous gentile. He saved hundreds of Jews and now those Jews have increased in number to over six thousand, known as the Schindler Jews. He risked being killed by his own party to save these people that were headed for despair. When a large mass of Jews was stuffed onto a train he took a hose and gave them water, preventing more deaths in a small action such as that. And although he knew that some members of the party such as the commandant started to become suspicious of what he was doing, he continued aiding the innocent but doomed race. Oscar Schindler did everything in his power to save the innocent and I dont think there was much more he could have done.
Personally, if I were a member of the Nazi party at the time I dont believe I could have forced myself to do what he did. I would have wanted to save the Jews for I knew what was going on was immoral, but the fear of being caught and then killed would discourage me from doing anything of the kind. Schindler was a man with strong beliefs, guts, and courage. I found what he did to be truly inspiring and the most compelling parts of the movie were when he drew up the list of Jews, over eight hundred names, and at the very end when he cries and the Jews give him a ring to show their gratitude. As a whole, I found Schindler's List to be very distressing.
I have been taught throughout my entire school career how badly the Jews were treated during the Holocaust, but now I realize how terrible it actually was. The most impressive scenes in the movie are also the most distressing and poignant ones which show the dreads and horrors of the Holocaust. Among the many is the scene where the Jews are have just been squeezed out of the ghetto but some have stayed in hiding places and dogs are used to find them. Then when the man accidentally steps on the piano keys, realizes he is going to die, and starts playing a piece, a scene of chaos commences as hiding Jews are found such as the many who is clinging to the bottom of a bed but then is found and shot over a hundred times. Another seen that is scary is when the girls are in the chamber, naked. We know that they will either be gassed or given showers.
Then the light go out suddenly and screams are heard and then the valves open up. I gave a sigh of relief when the water came out. Another water scene is when the Jews are cooped up in a train and the crowding along with the terrible heat is killing them. And when water is given to them through the compassion of Oscar Schindler they are much relieved. Steven Spielberg does an excellent job of filming the entire movie but this scene especially.
It feels as if you are right there. What I found to be one of the most saddening parts of the movie was when the children were being taken away on the trucks and they were waiving goodbye to their parents and elders. The parents are in a state of despair but the children on the other hand have no idea where theyre going. Children are like that today too.
If a stranger offers them candy or money they will willingly go into the car, just as the Nazis probably told them they were taking them to a park. But not all of the children were susceptible to persuasion. Some stayed in the camp and stayed in their hiding places. But some children were turned down when asking to share a hiding place such as the boy in the waste holder.
I believe that this shows the smarts of the children. They know that if they have too many people in the same place they might make too much noise and theyll be found. However I found this rejection to be pointless. If I were a child in the camp I would have allowed someone to share my hiding place provided it was big enough. Lastly, I believe that the Jews could have definitely done something about what was happening to them. Although the Germans might have had guns, the Jews had numbers and something to fight for.
Theyd be fighting for their freedom and when people fight for something as paramount as that they usually win it. What happened to the Jews was a horrible thing. Innocent people were killed and an entire race was almost vaporized. However, that happened fifty years ago and since then the world has matured. There is no longer any extermination of a certain people due to race but there is racial discrimination today towards all races, just like there was when the war was over. The remaining Jews who had made it through the Holocaust had no where to go for wherever they ventured theyd be discriminated against.
The soldier who came to Schindler's factory told them this. The world needs to learn to accept all different types of people whether they be Jewish, Christian, Black, White, or without an arm, such as the factory worker who was shot in the head due to his handicap.
