Hester Prynne is a beautiful woman who came from a family that had nothing. She is the kind of person that other people are jealous of because she is calm about everything. When she had to stand on the scaffold for three hours, she did not try to hide and she also did not get scared. From what people could see on the outside, she was perfect except for the scarlet letter.
Even though everybody in the town was talking about her and her sin, Hester did not worry about them. She had other things to think about. Things such as if should she tell that Chillingworth is her real husband or that Dimmesdale is Pearl s real father. Hester also had to think about and care for her daughter. Hester has much strength and not many weaknesses, which would seem backwards to someone in her situation.
Some of her strengths include not telling about Dimmesdale and Chillingworth. Most women in that time would give the name up the first time they were asked. Another strength is her ability to keep her head high in almost any situation, such as standing on the scaffold while people were taunting and asking her questions. A major weakness of Hester s is that she is uncomfortable with the scarlet letter. At first she wanted to cover it up, but she realized it would not do any good.
She is still uncomfortable about the letter, but it does not bother her as much anymore. Hester knows that she committed adultery and that it was wrong. In her future she would probably want to watch Pearl grow up, take off her scarlet letter, and move away so that she could be with Dimmesdale, Chillingworth, or whomever else she wants to be with. Arthur Dimmesdale is a man that many people look up to. Mainly for two reasons: he is a Reverend and he came from one of the great English universities.
He has a white, lofty, and impending brow and large, brown, melancholy eyes. Dimmesdale has one major weakness. He does not have the strength to tell that he is Pearl s father. Another one of his weaknesses is Hester.
When he talks to her, his lips tremble, the blood runs from his cheeks, and he places his hand over his heart. In Dimmesdale s future, it seems that he may want to confess, of have Hester confess for him, and if it were possible, to watch his daughter grow up. Roger Chillingworth is Hester Prynne s long-lost husband. He is small in stature. One of his strengths includes being able to understand Hester s situation. He does not like fact that she had a child by another man, but he is taking it very well.
Chillingworth s weakness is that he seems jealous, because he says that he will do anything to find out who is Pearl s father. In his future, he wants to find out who the man is that Hester has been hiding, and also, possibly to live with Hester again.
