When I first came to college there were a lot things I had to get used to, living in the dorms, school work, freedom, etc. Over time I became used to being in college. But the one thing I still haven't gotten used to is sleeping, or I should say lack of sleeping. For me, sleep is something that happens very rarely.

You might count the naps here or there but I basically don't get very much sleep at all. For some reason I find it necessary to stay up to wee hours of the morning doing absolutely nothing. Sometimes I'm up late studying and actually doing something constructive but more often than not you " ll catch me passing the hours by, wandering aimlessly down the halls. You could definitely consider me a night-owl. I have noticed that good sleeping habits are hard to come by especially in college because a majority of students are night-owls. I'm sure part of this is because we are taking advantage of the fact that we can do anything we want to now.

Mommy and daddy aren't around to tell us we need to get some sleep. The big thing is that there are many things to distract you and keep you from going to bed. I'm sure you have found yourself at one time or another drifting off in one of your classes due to the lack of sleep. I have this problem and I'm sure many other students do as well, so I have come up with some ways that I think will resolve this problem. The first thing to do in order to form better sleeping habits is to try to go to bed at relatively the same time every night and get up at the same time the each day. Have you ever gone to bed at say two in the morning and then slept till one or two the next day?

Well if you have I'm sure you " ve noticed that you feel even more tired than if you had gotten a less amount of sleep. This is because your body has gotten too much sleep. Your body needs at least eight hours of sleep per day so if you go over it you " ll tend to be more tired. Going to bed at the same time is going to be hard and will require a lot of discipline but if you go to bed at the same time every night your body will enter into a pattern and you won't be as tired the next day. I know It is hard to get a set sleeping schedule since most of you classes aren't at the same times everyday.

If you know that you are a night owl then don't bother to schedule morning classes. You know you won't get up for them. Another useful tip that I'm sure most of your mothers have told you at one time or another is to avoid caffeine before bed. Caffeine is a stimulant and it makes your body restless which makes it hard for you to relax and fall asleep. It is found in coffee, tea and dark colas so if you drink a lot of soda make sure it's caffeine free. Along with caffeine, avoid sugary foods such as candy and chocolate.

The sugar makes you hyper and makes it hard to fall asleep. The next and very important tip is to avoid taking long naps during the day. Obviously if you sleep a lot in the afternoon you won't be able to fall asleep as well at night. Besides, when you wake up from a two or three hour nap in the afternoon you tend to feel much more sleepy and groggy then before. Instead of taking long naps, take short power naps that are about 20 or 25 minutes long. This gives your body enough time to relax and gain back energy and it's not too long to make you feel sleepy when you wake up.

This may seem like nothing but if you try it you " ll notice that you feel energized and you " ll last the rest of your day without feeling sleepy. Sleep is one of the most important parts of being healthy and happy. If you don't get enough sleep you will not be as effective in school and will be much more susceptible to illnesses. I know it's hard to get the right amount of sleep in college. I need to work on it very much but I know that these tips will help very much and make a more healthy and productive lifestyle.
