In the store, rip van winkle, Ivrinings character Rip at the beginning is a worthless person to his wife and his farm. The great error in Rips composition was an insuperable aversion to all kinds of profitable labor. Rip was would walk a mile to get milk for a hungry baby, but he would not milk his own cow for his wife. To some, he is lazy; to Rip himself, he is just living. To avoid his wifes tangents Rip took his gun and dog, wolf, and head off into the woods. Here, he drinks with some tiny men and ends up sleeping for twenty years.
When Rip woke up everything had changed. As he approached the village, he met a number of people, but none that he knew, which somewhat surprised him, for he had thought himself acquainted with every one in the country round. Their dress too, was of a different fashion from that to which he was accustomed. Rip walks into a city that once he knew will but no longer does that hold to be true. His wife died; his dog does not recognize him.
The country is no longer under British rule. All these things changed. In contrast, Rip is the only constant in this story. Rip started out useless to his family and after all of that, ended up living his life that same way he began it, worthless. Irving is commenting on how people are always changing. One minute the community where Rip lived was for the King and the next they were painting the town sign red white and blue.
He is stating that it is better to stay true to oneself than to go with the flow of society. Rip Van Winkle did triumph throughout the course of his life. He knew what he was and did not change to satisfy others.
