Chapter 20 + To his own surprise, Mr. Collins found his feelings towards Elizabeth had not dwindled. Upon seeing her the following morning at breakfast, he resolved to have her hand. Her refusal of him, he reasoned, must be simply the female response to a marriage proposal, for a refusal from her to someone such as himself was unthinkable. Miss Elizabeth is, he thought, more stubborn and opinionated than most women. It might require more to convince her.

Perhaps he had been overly formal in his address. Perhaps his reasons had not pleased her, being more about himself and the honorable Lady Catherine than about Elizabeth. A second proposal, one with new reasons, one more personal, was in order. Finding Elizabeth proved more difficult than Mr.

Collins expected. At length he walked about Longbourn, and being unable to locate her, he strolled out into the gardens, where he found Lydia and Kitty sitting on a bench with Elizabeth. The two younger Bennets were engaged in conversation involving much giggling and whispering, while Elizabeth was detached and staring intently at the landscape. Noticing his approach, the girls quickly departed the bench and walked to some nearby shrubs, where they undoubtedly hoped to overhear the impending conversation. Her sisters swift exit broke Elizabeth from her thoughts and she turned to see Mr. Collins advancing.

Unable to escape, she sat up stiffly and prepared herself for what was surely to be another of his long speeches. I bid you good day, my dear Miss Elizabeth. It pleases me to see you looking so well, Mr. Collins began as he sat down. After much consideration I have determined my previous address may not have accurately conveyed my feelings or intentions towards you. I understand it is a way of women to reject a proposal at first, therefore I beg you listen once again, this time to new reasons for our union.

Elizabeth saw no easy escape from the situation. Mr. Collins obviously was unwilling to listen to reason, or he would have ended this absurd display. She felt it unwise to insult him further, or to refuse to listen.

Perhaps a second direct rejection would halt his advances. She nodded rigidly, allowing Mr. Collins to continue. My dear Miss Elizabeth, Mr.

Collins started again, I feel my first address did not stress you personally as the main object of my wishes. I reaffirm my original reasons, yet I feel it necessary to add to them three more. First, I find your great beauty both enticing and irresistible. From the moment I laid eyes upon you it has been hard for me to think of anything else. I previously stated that I came to Longbourn with intent to marry one of the Bennet sisters, and I had heard much of their beauty. And yet these rumors did no service for what I found upon my arrival.

I admit I first laid eyes upon your sister, Jane, and she appeared to me the ideal marriage prospect. Your kind mother then told me of her imminent proposal, and I then saw you, an even greater beauty, and I realized that I could do no better. I then observed your wit and intelligence during my stay, which made me fall even further for you. That leads me into my second reason, that our match would be not just about beauty, but about intelligence. I have always held a love for books and the type of witty discussions you yourself engage in so often. I do not mean to flatter myself, but I always thought it improbable that I would find a woman who could match my intellect.

In you, however, I have found this woman, and I see our lives together fulfilling both of our intellectual needs. My third reason is the happiness of both yourself and your family. The lack of a male heir and the consequent entailment of Longbourn is most unfortunate for you and your family. However, the estate does not need to leave your immediate family, nor must you or your sisters be forced to worry about financial needs in the future.

Our match insures the security of your life and the lives of your sisters. Would it not be desirable to live your days in the house of your family and pass it on to your own children? To be able to support your sisters in the off chance that they do not marry? I therefore, based on these reasons and those before it, ask again for you to give me your hand in marriage.

Elizabeth was, at first, unable to respond. She felt it burdensome to contain her laughter at Mr. Collins behavior, for his lack of formality was so obviously contrived and his words, after hearing him speak not a small deal over the past week, appeared somewhat disingenuous. Although she believed his feelings towards her sincere, he was clearly incapable of achieving any level of comfort in speaking with her, nor was he able to express his feelings with any kind of candor. His ridiculous attempt at informality proved he was unable to act any other way than the overly formal manner to which she was accustomed. And his arrogance was unbearable, particularly being phrased in his excessively apologetic form.

After a moment s silence and a careful consideration of these issues, Elizabeth tried to form yet another response, this time one that would cease Mr. Collins pursuit of her. No excuses could now be given, no apologies made. She had to be clear about her feelings. My dear Mr. Collins, she began, I must yet again state my refusal.

I am truly flattered by your address, I cannot remember the last time such kind words were bestowed upon me. I thank you for your attention and favor. But I must confess I do not share your attraction. I assure you that this answer is definite, I shall not accept your offer. With that, Elizabeth rose and quitted the garden. Mr.

Collins decided to end his pursuit and leave the situation with his pride, though injured, still intact. He must move past Elizabeth, and soon, for he resolved that he must find a wife before his return to the parsonage. Lady Catherine must not have to condescend again to bid he find a wife.
