Pride and Prejudice In the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, the novel was written in the 19 th century when marriage was very important and played an important role for every family. The parents of the Bennet girls wanted each of their five daughters to get married to some gentlemen that was wealthy and had a high social standing so that their daughters would have a better life than they did. The major theme in Jane Austen s Pride and Prejudice is marriage that plays an important role in this story for each of the couples that get married. Each of the couples marry for different reasons and they are for money, social standing, security and wealthy. The first couple is Charlotte and Mr. Collins and they get married not for love but because Mr.
Collins wanted to get married before he gets too old to attract a wife for himself. Charlotte said I ask only for a comfortable home; and considering Mr. Collins s character, connections, and situations in life, I am convinced that my chances of happiness with him is as fair as most people can boast on entering the marriage state (Norton 93). Charlotte was referring to that all she wanted out this marriage was a nice home and she made several comments that her and Mr.
Collins both go their separate ways and don t spend much time together. Charlotte had always thought of marriage as an object and she said It was only the honorable provisions for well educated young women of small fortune, and however uncertain of giving happiness must be their pleasantest preservative from want (91). She had always thought that only wealthy young woman would be asked to get married and she was very excited and glad that she was one of them. Next Jane and Bingley get married because of their physical attractions towards one another and not because of love. This attraction started as a result from the night at the ball. Bingley made a comment to his friend Dance from across the room that he wanted to dance with Jane Bennet cause he said She is the most beautiful creature I have ever beheld (10).
Bingley was referring to how he had to dance twice in one night with her because he couldn t keep his eyes off of her.
