The Awakening In the story The Awakening, Chopin uses metaphors to relate her character towards the end of the novel. She uses built emotion to express the feeling and entrapment that eventually lead to a fatal conclusion. Describing the character begins in a downward spiral into the rebirth of her mind, finally ending in a sensual re-awakening when the character realizes what fear is, but also what strengths she had. A bird with a broken wing was beating the air above, reeling, fluttering, circling disabled down, down to the water. At this point the character has not yet realized where her life was going, and was only feeling it becoming worsened by her tie to the affairs.
Starting with her broken vows to her husband, Leone. Her torn love towards Robert, and her sexual longings and formalities with Agree, which was more of a thorn in her already broken wing. The emotions tearing her apart, much like the bird with the broken wing, the only way she could go was down as the situation was given only to worsen. How strange and awful it seemed to stand naked under the sky!
How delicious! She felt like some new-born creature, opening its eyes in a familiar world that it had never known. Edna was finally introduced to her life mistakes, taking view on her life in a new perspective, a way she had never seen before. Standing before the ocean she realized that she could have a second chance, an opportunity to live things over. The feeling of an end will help to bring a new beginning. The touch of the sea in sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close embrace.
Edna, her fears drowned by her sexual awakening, as the ocean invites her to begin anew. She feels safe within the oceans clutches, as it relates to her as a true sense of well being and safety, more than she could have received from any male relationship. It s related to a sense of being free, feeling unbound by social restriction or emotional conviction. Are relationships so constricted that one must die in order to live? Overall, her relation of emotions through Edna may give us insight on the writer as well.
She relates very well as failing emerges into a mental awakening, finally into a total emotional rebirth as the character finds her self.
