The novel, Wuthering Heights, is intricately written, and includes a diversity of love and hate between characters. Wuthering Heights was first published in London in 1847, and was written by Emily Bronte. Emily Bronte was born in 1818, and lived in the parsonage of the town of Haworth, Yorkshire. She resided with her brother, two sisters, and her father, Reverend Bronte. Her relatives were all writers and poets. They lived in a bleak and overpoweringly religious town, and there wasnt very much for the Bronte children to do to keep themselves occupied.

So they began writing, and created a library of journals, stories, poems and plays about themselves. Emily briefly left her town of Haworth to attend boarding schools, but it wasnt until she was twenty-four when she attended school for a year in Brussels with her sister Charlotte. In 1846, Charlotte convinced her sisters to publish their work. Emily used the pseudonym Ellis Bell until the second edition of her novel was published in 150, but she had already been dead for two years. The novel includes the beginning of new life, and the ending of others.

The story begins with the unexpected arrival of Mr. Lockwood, the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange. There he meets Heathcliff: his landlord, Catherine Linton and Hareton Earnshaw. He knows nothing about this family, but the story soon unravels when he arrives at his own home, and he befriends his maid Ellen. She informs Mr. Lockwood of all that has happened from past to present.

He is attracted to Catherine, and revolted by Heathcliff's morose demeanor. He would like to help Catherine, but is called away on business. When he returns six months later, he discovers that Heathcliff has died, Hareton has inherited his Uncles fortune, and that Hareton and Catherine are living happily in love together. There are a few key characters that this novel could not do without. They include Heathcliff, Catherine Earnshaw, Catherine Linton, Edgar Linton, Linton Heathcliff, Ellen, Hareton Earnshaw and Mr. Lockwood.

Without these characters, Wuthering Heights could not be the same. Catherine Earnshaw's father brought Heathcliff to Wuthering Heights. He had found Heathcliff on the side of the street. A dirty, ragged black-haired child: big enough to walk Seeing it starving, and houseless, and as good as dumb, in the streets of Liverpool; where he picked it up and inquired for its owner. Not a soul knew to whom it belonged; and his money and time being both limited, he thought it better to take it home with him at once, then run into expenses there; because he was determined he would not leave it as he had found it. Catherines father tried to make his family incorporate Heathcliff into their lives.

Only Catherine came around, but she soon became too fond of him, and he of her. After Mr. Earnshaw's death, Heathcliff was moved to the servants quarters, and was treated like a servant. At a young age he schemed and plotted revenge on those who had treated him badly. When the Linton's came into their lives, he became jealous of Catherines attentions towards Edgar Linton. One night he overheard Catherine saying it would degrade her to marry him, and he disappeared for three and a half years, to return with a fortune.

Unfortunately, Catherine had already married Edgar Linton. Heathcliff learned that if he was to marry Edgar's younger sister, he would receive Edgar's fortune after his demise. Heathcliff already owned Wuthering Heights, it was owed to him by Hareton's father, who had a terrible addiction to gambling and liquor. After his father died, Hareton lived as a servant. Time went by, and Heathcliff discovered he could force his sickly son Linton, and Edgar's daughter Catherine to marry- so he could inherit Thrushcross Grange after Edgar and Linton passed. Heathcliff was an evil and shrewd man, who tried to change his ways towards the end of his life.

Ellen informed Mr. Lockwood at the beginning of her story that Heathcliff resides in the less desirable Wuthering Heights, so he can gain more money from his tenants at Thrushcross Grange. He married for money, and forced his son to do the same. His hobbies in life seemed to be destruction and revenge. At a young age, he vowed he would revenge those who had treated him wrong. However, he did do some good at the end of his life.

During his last days, before he died of self-inflicted starvation, he seemed to realize all he had done to harm was pointless. He had made himself and many others suffer tremendously, while he gained nothing. His niece and nephew were happy together, as he once wished he and his Catherine could be. I think he decided he could do one good thing- give Hareton his fortune, which in turn would be shared with Catherine.

He thereby gave the fortune back to the proper owners. Possibly, he did this because he knew he was close to death, and was so happy at the thought of joining his beloved Catherine. We will never know, but can only speculate. Catherine was wild and mischievous all her life. She did not even appreciate Heathcliff when he was first introduced to their house. She showed her humor at meeting him by grinning and spitting at the stupid little thing.

Catherine, it seemed, had not a care in the world for any other than herself. She did not respect authority, and wondered why she was always getting scolded. Catherine, she had ways with her such as I never saw a child take up before; and she put all of us past our patience fifty times and oftener during the day: from the hour she came down stairs till the hour she went to bed, we had not a minutes security that she wouldnt be in mischief. She would have liked to abuse the servants, but they would not allow her to. She ran wild and free with Heathcliff, until she met the Linton's. Catherine and Linton were spying on the Linton children, and the dogs were set on them.

The Linton's discovered Catherine was a lady, and they set out to civilize her. Catherine stayed with Linton's for five weeks. Things changed between Catherine and Heathcliff when she returned to Wuthering Heights. She began to spend more time with Edgar Linton. Catherine confessed to Ellen her engagement to Edgar and love for Heathcliff. Catherine didnt know Heathcliff was in the room too, but all he heard was Catherine saying it would degrade her to marry him.

He ran away, and Catherine was devastated. She did marry Edgar, and was pregnant when Heathcliff returned. Catherine tried to convince the two that becoming friends would be an exceptional thing to do, but because of old bitterness, they refused. She fell ill on her own accord, saying that their feud was the cause of it. She died soon after she gave birth to her daughter Catherine. Catherine Linton was spoiled by her father, but still retained a wonderfully loving personality.

She loved her father and Ellen dearly. Catherine knew nothing of her cousins living nearby until she was sixteen. By a matter of chance, she met her Uncle Heathcliff, and he took her to Wuthering Heights, thus beginning a romance between her and Linton. Heathcliff blackmails Catherine into marrying Linton.

Her father is on his deathbed, and Catherine desperately wants to see him. But Heathcliff wont let her leave until she marries Linton. Miss Linton, I shall enjoy myself remarkably in thinking your father should be miserable: I shall not sleep for satisfaction. You could not have hit on no surer way of fixing your residence under my roof, for the next twenty four hours, than informing me that such an event would follow.

As to your promise to marry Linton, Ill take care you shall keep it; you shall not quit Linton died soon after they were married, and she remains at Wuthering Heights, for she has no where else to go. After a year or so, she makes up with Hareton, and they fall in love. Pure happiness is Catherines when Heathcliff dies, and her property is inherited to Hareton through Heathcliff. Catherine was brought down by Heathcliff, but he did not ruin her.

Edgar Linton could be considered an innocent, plagued by a man who would not let his family alone. He never did anything to Heathcliff, but he never had any respect for him, because he didnt have to. He never understood his wifes deep-rooted affections for Heathcliff, but I think he did love her. Edgar put up with Catherines horrible temper. Edgar thoughtlessly laid hold of her hands to deliver Hareton. In an instant one was wrung free and the astonished young man felt it applied on his own ear.

Even though Ellen tried to convince him of Catherines behavior, he couldnt stand to be away from her. He knew Heathcliff was a fiend however, and tried to keep hi daughter Catherine away from him. Mr. Heathcliff is a diabolical man, delighting to wrong and ruin those he hates, if they give him the slightest oppurtunity. I knew that you could not keep up an acquaintance with your cousin, without being brought into contact with him; and I knew that he would detest you, on my account. So for your own good, and nothing else, I took precautions that you should not see Linton But Edgar Linton was also weak.

He was always ill, and not used to the harsh demeanor of Heathcliff. He considered Heathcliff a moral poison that would contaminate the most virtuous. Edgar was a peaceful man, and he died a peaceful death, after his daughter returned to him. Bibliography:
