OutlinIntroductioClasseRacisWhat I thin This essay is about the class structure of todays society, and of Maycomb also how the social situation represents the rest of the nation during the 1930 s. This story To Kill A Mocking Bird took place in Maycomb between 1933 and 1935, during this time period a black person that was wealthy was considered lower class than a white bum. Blacks were treated very differently only because of their skin colour, this was not only in Maycomb, but the whole nation was acting this way. The wealthy were high class, the middle class were the people making enough money to live and had a little extra, the lower class were the drunks, the whites that lived blacks, and anyone who the nation rejected because of their differences, even lower than the lower class were the blacks, it didnt matter if they were wealthy or not they were considered lower than lower class. During this time period blacks were not allowed to use the same buses, bathrooms, fountains, benches, schools, restaurants (you name it) and only because of one little difference, their skin colour.

It seems to me that during this time period people were very racist, sexist and pessimistic, they would not matter to anyone today (there are always exceptions). An example of this is when Atticus tells Scout that the Ewells are different because they live like animals. Children were not born racist, it is something that has to be taught, even if it is not direct the children live in this racist environment and grow up to be racist. We can see in this book that Scout and Jem live in a racist environment by their father.

This shows that the children have choices to make towards racism and it could get hard at times for them to make the choices because of their surroundings. There still are class structure today, but they are not as important as they use to be.
