Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck is an intriguing and realistic tale about the lives of two men, George and Lenny, who travel together. Through their journey they experience many obstacles while trying to achieve their dream. Unfortunately they are not able to do so due to unexpected circumstances. In his book Steinbeck explores many themes such as the characters fears of loneliness and their fights to achieve their dreams.

One of main themes of Of Mice and Men is that of loneliness. This affects all of the characters in one way or another. For example, the reason that George travels with Lenny is because although he knows that he would be better off without Lenny, he does not want to be lonely. Crooks, the black stable buck, is also affected by this because since he is black he is not allowed in the bunkhouse and is therefore forced to live in the barn by himself.

He feels that it is not right that he be exiled in that way due to the color of his skin. Candy, the old swamper, is reluctant to shoot his old, dying dog because he fears being left alone. And finally Curley s wife is always talking and flirting with the workers because she is tired of always sitting in the house by herself while Curley is working or out. The setting and characterization of the characters play an essential role in the development of the story. The great detail with which the setting is described at the beginning of each chapter helps the reader to vividly imagine what is occurring in the story. The setting also contributes to the theme of loneliness because since it is set on a farm where men are always coming and going there is less chance for one to make lasting friendships.

Characterization is also a key part of the story. The vivid descriptions of the characters help the reader to really be able to picture him or her. George is described as small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features. While Lenny is described as a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, with wide, sloping shoulders; and he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws. In Of Mice and Men the protagonists are George and Lenny and the antagonist is Curley because he is always going against what George says and trying to fight Lenny. Another important part of the story is the conflict.

In Of Mice and Men there are various conflicts. Such as the one between Candy and himself when he is trying to decide whether or not to shoot his dog and the one between Lennie and Curley when Curley is picking a fight with Lennie and he does not want to fight. But the main conflict of the story is between all the characters the extenuating circumstances that keep them from accomplishing their dreams. A variety of techniques are used to tell this story. The most important of these techniques are foreshadowing and the use of symbols. Foreshadowing is used throughout the story, for example when George tells Lennie that if he ever got in trouble he should go back to the riverbank where they had slept before reporting to work on the farm.

Another example of foreshadowing was the fact that Lennie liked to pet soft things and he had gotten in trouble before for doing so. Symbolism also plays a key role in the story. Candy s dog is one of the main symbols. He symbolizes Candy s fear of being abandoned when he was too old to work. The killing of Candy s dog also foreshadowed the way George killed Lennie. The title of a book is also very important.

The significance of the title Of Mice and Men is that although one might plan everything down to the letter nothing ever turns out the way one wants it to. I think this is the most suitable title for this story because although George, Lennie, and Candy had planned every aspect of their plan to buy a piece of land, it was destroyed when Lennie killed Curley s wife. I believe that what makes the book Of Mice and Men a classic is that anyone who reads it will be able to appreciate Steinbeck s simplistic and realistic style of writing. Also it does not matter what age one is because all can enjoy it.
