The novel Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck in 1937, was a tragic story about the poignancy and the complex life of two migrant workers: George Milton, and Lenny Small. These two dream of owning a small farm of their own one day. George acts as the father figure to Lenny, who is retarded, but George needs Lenny for his immense physical strength, and to keep him company. They find work at a vegetable farm working only so they can eat. Near the end, Lenny accidentally kills the boss s daughter because he like (s) to pet nice things (her hair) with my (his) fingers (90). She becomes scared as he pets her hair and he doesn t know what to do so he holds on, shakes, and kills her.

George tells him to meet him at a certain spot where they camped out at before they got the job. This place happens to be A few miles south of Soledad, (where) the Salinas drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green (1). To save Lenny from being attacked by a mob of migrant workers, George kills him: not only to save Lenny, but also to save himself from the torment of his insipid friend. John Steinbeck wrote this great novel. He led an interesting life as well and most of this novel is based on life experience. This thrilling tale was just one of twenty-three novels written by Steinbeck.

Born in Salinas Ca. , in 1902, Steinbeck grew up in a fertile valley about twenty miles from the Pacific Coast. In 1919, he was accepted into Stanford University, where he enrolled in writing and literature courses. He left Stanford College in 1925 without even getting his degree. Next, he became a journalist in New York City. After that he moved to Lake Tahoe where he started working on his first novel called Cup of Gold published in 1929. He married and moved to Pacific Grove where he wrote three more novels.

In 1930, Steinbeck decided on changing his style drastically, focusing on the California working class. This experiment included the writing of the book, Of Mice and Men. He went on writing many more books and at the same time, he married a second time. After writing for a long time, he moved to Sag harbor with his third wife. Steinbeck wrote just five more novels before he died in 1968, having won the Nobel Peace Prize ion 1967.

Steinbeck is praised and accepted for his achievements and for his experimental styles. His books have marked many realistic eras that most people have not, nor will not experience. This is greatly important in the education of people, not only in the history book sense, but also in the hands on, life situation that the reader can feel as if it were their own. Although some reject John Steinbeck s Of Mice and Men, for its political incorrectness, many think that Steinbeck is a very remarkable and notable author for his display of an impenetrable friendship an unlikely pair, and his incredibly realistic aspects of migrant workers in the Salinas Valley during the 1930 s. He has such a great grasp on the subject because he grew up there. Critics however dislike his book for only one reason.

Some critics reject Of Mice and Men because of its politically incorrect terms and circumstances. The attitude toward the African-American man is one subject for negative criticism. The workers use words such as stable buck (20) and nigger (20) referring to this man. This book was written in 1937, when it was not only alright to refer to African-American people using these terms, it was preferred. Another man says how much fun him and the workers had one night when Smitty (another worker) took after the nigger the nigger did pretty good but Smitty woulda killed him if hi could a used his legs (20). This is implying that all black people have lower strength and / or worse fighting skills than white people according to some critics: but in the text of the book, the man had a crooked back (19) and that both Smitty and the African-American man were very drunk.

If a crooked back doesn t make one a worse fighter and therefore have less strength than a white person, well than that is a true statement but in reality, the back trouble was the only thing that made the black person less of a man. Because of these criticisms, this book has become or attempted to become banned in schools across the nation, but this book is valuable for many reasons. Despite the negative criticisms directed toward this book, it has been known as a classic, for its realistic portrayal of migrant workers during the 1930 s. John Steinbeck actually went to Soledad during this period of time and obtained actual information on these workers. In his book, he portrays a worry of lice migrants may have, when George sees an anti lice ointment on a stand of his bed at his new workplace and complains. Another great example of Steinbeck s realistic portrayal is when the short stalky boss picks on Lenny just because the boss is in power and can do whatever he wants to these workers.

The fact that a bunch of farm workers are living at their workplace and only occasionally leaving to raise hell (65) is a great example of showing the workers in a very real manner. The idea that Steinbeck portrays is so real, that the reader almost feels like they are there. The realism is a great example of why Steinbeck is applauded by many notable critics. Many critics like Steinbeck for other reasons too. The fact that two perfect strangers could have such a strong relationship is another great example of Steinbeck s immense achievement with this novel. When George talked for Lenny during the job interview, that was an amazing and wonderful show of friendship because George was saving his best friend from losing a job.

George also let Lenny have a puppy from Slim s (a worker) litter. The reason that this was great is because Lenny needed a companion that he could take care of, just like George did for him. Another great display of friendship is when Lenny said that he would move up to the hills and find a cave to live in, but George told him his favorite story of being different than most guys like them. The reason that they are so different is because they have got each other to look out for. George does end up killing Lenny near the end but it is the hardest thing he has ever had to do.

He does it to protect Lenny from being attacked by a mob. The reason George thought that he should kill Lenny is because he was his only friend and he did not want any person to make Lenny suffer, he wanted to do it to leave Lenny his dignity. George and Lenny's friendship is extraordinary and is on a much higher level than the friendship most are faced with today. John Steinbeck s Of Mice and Men is a great book because of its portrayal of migrant workers in the 1930 s, and its display of friendship between two different individuals.

In my opinion, this novel is very significant because it shows an important time in history better than any history book. I also think that the bond between the two protagonists of the story is phenomenal and should be shared with people everywhere. Steinbeck s experiment (Unknown 398) was a complete success and he is one of the best writers to go down in history.
