American author John Steinbeck, in his many works has been known to tell his stories by the use of an authorial voice. Within one of his works in particular entitled East of Eden, he intentionally depicts one of his main characters, Catherine Ames as possessing both monster and animal-like characteristics of evil. Steinbeck first shows this intention by first personally declaring Catherine Ames as being a monster, but bearing a gentle beauty. Secondly, Steinbeck exposes her monster-like characteristics through her evil actions.
Lastly, Steinbeck changes his description of Catherine Ames physical nature from being monster-like to anomalistic. Catherine Ames is portrayed as an evil woman bearing monster-like characteristics on several occasions throughout Steinbeck's classic East of Eden. As the authorial voice throughout the entire book, Steinbeck leaves much room for his own opinions as he recounts his story. Steinbeck first begins his depiction of Catherine Ames by declaring, I believe there are monsters born in the world... It is my belief that Cathy Ames was born with the tendencies, or lack of them, which drove and forced her all of her life, (Steinbeck, 95, 96). Immediately upon beginning his description of Catherine Ames, Steinbeck announces his conviction that she bears monster-like characteristics.
Through the use of appearance versus reality, Steinbeck further illustrates Catherine Ames as emitting a gentle beauty among those of her town, unsuspecting that her real intentions are murderous Steinbeck's intent of conveying Catherine Ames as bearing monster-like characteristics continues not only in personality but in her actions as well. In order to reassure the reader that Catherine Ames does indeed possess bestial characteristics, he recounts on page 114 - 115 that the fire broke out... the Ames house went up like a rocket...
