Throughout Nectar in a Sieve Ruku and Nathan s family suffer terribly. Through monsoons, flooding, droughts, poverty, and starvation they struggle to stay alive. Though they suffer, they accept it as a part of life and go on with their ways. Ruku and Nathan keep on looking towards a brighter future without complaining about their misfortune. When the monsoons break out early, Nathan and Ruku are unprepared to protect themselves against the storms and flooding.

All their crops are lost and they have a limited food supply. They do not complain to anyone about their misfortune and hope for better times. On page 47 - 48 Ruku and Kenny see each other and start talking. On the outskirts of the village there is Kenny. His face is grim and long, his eyes are burning in his pallid face. He sees us and comes up.

You are starving too, I suppose We have a little rice. It will last us till times are better. Says Ruku. Times are better, times are better, he shouts. Times will not be better for many months. Meanwhile you will suffer and die, you meek suffering fools.

Why do you keep this ghastly silence? Why do you not demand-cry out for help-do something? There is nothing in this country, oh God, there is nothing. We shrink from his violence.

What can we do-what can he mean. The man is raving. We go on our way. This is an example of Ruku s response to disaster. She does not seem to understand what Kenny is saying about crying out. More suffering occurs when the rains are late and all the crops suffer and die.

Poverty strikes Ruku s family at a time when the rent for their land is due. They sell a few items they don t need, but do not even have half the amount they owe the landlord. There is also the problem of Kunthi. She blackmails them and they give her almost all their food. On page 87 Kunthi says I will have the rice now or your husband shall hear that his wife is not as virtuous as he believes-or she pretends.

Kunthi gets more rice from Nathan because he doesn t want Ruku to know he is the father of Kunthi s children. At this point they have neither food nor money, but once again they know that times will get better. Looking for a brighter future, Nathan and Ruku find ways to stay alive. When Ruku and Nathan get thrown off the land, they decide to go to the city to find their son. Unsuccessful as they are, they manage to stay alive. They are robbed of all their money and belongings and seldom is food available to them.

They work a long time trying to make money so they can return home even though they have no home or land to return to. Ruku and Nathan accept misfortune as a part of their lives. This is because their lives are always unfortunate and they do not realize something can be done about it. In a way their ignorance is good because they don t always look at the negative side of things. On the other hand they could get a lot done by getting help from others that are more knowledgeable. Ruku and Nathan s misfortune is a part of life and they accept it as that, instead of trying to cry out for help.
