Frederick Douglass was extremely important to U. S. history. He was also a key person in the movement to eliminate slavery. If it werent for him, slavery almost certainly wouldve gone on for numerous years afterward.
He was a remarkable speaker and he influenced so many people that slavery was wrong and that they should strive to stop it. Frederick Douglass, who was initially known as Frederick Bailey, was born a slave in Tuckahoe, Maryland. He did not know out the precise date of his birth, as a very small amount of slaves did. He knew little about his mother, and even less of his father with the exception of that he was white. When he was young he was mistreated, and had exceedingly grueling labor, and was frequently whipped for numerous things. When he was young, one of the countless masters wives (Frederick had several masters in his life) he had in his life taught him how to read and write.
Her husband got livid with her and said that if slaves could read and write, then they wouldnt be suitable to be slaves. His wife instantaneously stopped and Frederick determined that if reading and writing was the road to freedom, than that was what he was going to do. And thats just what he did. He stole bread from his masters and sold it to deprived white kids in exchange for them providing him with reading and writing lessons. With the little money he saved up from doing errands, he would buy a newspaper or a book. On every occasion his masters saw him in a bedroom unaccompanied for more than a couple minutes they assumed he was reading and would come and get him.
But bit-by-bit Frederick obtained an adequate amount of knowledge to be able to read an entire book, or understand a newspaper. He also learned to read and write, and that was a whole lot for a slave to be able to do. He was moved out to the city where he had a great deal of added freedom than he did working on the plantation. He wasnt whipped any longer, and was fed an adequate amount of food to be able to survive. He wanted to escape so bad he would do anything to do so.
So, he dressed up as a sailor and took the train to New York. He had to use a phony ID that said he was a free man. He was really panicky when they reached New York and they checked IDs. This wasnt the first time Frederick tried to escape; he tried numerous times before finally getting it right. He even got sent to prison for being an organizer of a strategy to depart one of his plantations.
After he reached New York, he instantly changed his name from Frederick Bailey to Frederick Douglass just in case someone tried to track him down and pull him back into slavery. He started going to antislavery conventions and meetings. At a convention, he was asked to speak and he spoke exceedingly well, and they asked him to speak at the American Anti-Slavery Society meeting. This was his first step to becoming a well-known, virtuous speaker. He started lecturing on how slavery is ruthless and how people should abolish it. People liked his style of speaking, and his sense of humor.
He told them about his experiences of slavery, and all the awful, rotten slaveholders. People thought he was a talented speaker, in fact they thought that he was too smart to be a slave. After hearing these rumors, he wrote the narrative of his life. After the publication of the narrative of his life, he fled to England so police wouldnt come and try to take him back to his legal owner.
While in England, he bought his freedom back with money he had accumulated over the years and came back to live to the United States. When in the United States, he founded a newspaper, and he named it the North Star. It mostly discussed slavery, but there were other issues in it such as equal rights for blacks. He started getting involved in other kinds of things related to human rights like womens rights. He started to attend womens rights conventions.
He became acquainted with all the womens rights activists such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. He was still very involved in the dispute for slavery. He traveled to England to begin a lecture tour, something he had always dreamed about. He was now telling people in other countries how awful slavery was. Frederick endorsed Abe Lincoln in the next presidential debate because he wanted someone to take a step to finally stopping slavery.
He backed him up and advertised for him because Abe was anti-slavery, but not hardcore. This way he had more of likelihood than some of the radical abolitionists running for president. Lincoln won the election, and a few states from the South formed the Confederacy. They did this because they were frightened that Lincoln would abolish slavery, and the South wouldnt have anybody to do all the work in the fields for them. There was a massive civil war, and in the middle of it Lincoln signed a document that said all slaves were free.
This way if the North won, all the slaves would be free. After numerous battles and an elongated time, the North finally won the war. Frederick Douglass finally achieved his most important objective: SLAVERY WAS FINALLY OVER. Bibliography: none
