A family torn apart by war. It is the beginning of the Revolutionary War and the tension is building both on the battlefield and at home. Tim Meeker, a common farm-boy, has a brother, Sam, which he has always looked up to. However, one day Sam and his father, Life, get into an argument about the war that is raging on.

Both of their tempers flare and consequently Sam leaves home and joins the Patriots to fight the oncoming British troops. His father greatly disapproves of Sam s actions because he is a Loyalist and doesn t feel that his son should be fighting the British. Sam feels that he has the right to fight for his freedom and that he should be able to make his own decisions because he is a grown man of sixteen years. In the meantime Tim, who loves both his father and Sam dearly, is torn between whose side he is on in the matter.

The story starts out at the Meeker family s tavern and house in Redding, Connecticut the start of the Revolution. In the tavern there are many men talking about the British troops being defeated in Massachusetts, one of the men there is Sam, Tim s brother. Sam is a Patriot that wishes to go out in battle to defeat the Lobsterbacks. Sam s father Eliphalet, also called Life, is a Loyalist that absolutely abhors the idea of his son dropping out of college to go to battle to fight the King s men. The two of them have a very heated argument and after a bit they decide to change the subject even though neither of them has changed their minds about judgment about each other s opinion.

After a while Tim has to go and do his daily chores which includes milking their cow, Old Pru, and he asks Sam to go out and help him. While Tim is doing his farm duties he asks Sam how college life is and what he is doing back home. Sam says that the reason he is there is a secret and that he ll tell him only if he promises not to tell their parents. Not wanting to hurt either his parents or his brother Tim is hesitant, but decides to hear the secret. Sam says that he is home in hopes that he will get the family s gun, Brown Bess.

The next morning Sam tries to steal the Brown Bess and his father catches him. Life and Sam get into an immense argument about weather Sam is going to go and fight the British or not. Finally Life flies into a rage and kicks Sam out of the house. On Sunday, while the rest of the family is at church Sam goes back to the tavern and steals the gun.

A bit later in the novel the Patriots passed through their town going door to door taking peoples weapons and food stuffs. When they eventually got to the Meeker s tavern they demanded Life for the Brown Bess. When Eliphalet said that Sam stole the gun, the Patriots did not believe him because it was Loyal territory. They threatened to kill Life if he didn t turn the gun over to them. Tim, who was worried about his father, ran out to get one of the colonels of the Patriots since Sam was a rebel he thought that he might be able to help.

On his way to get the colonel he found Sam sleeping with the gun tucked under his arm. Tim decided to snatch the Brown Bess from Sam, and just as he was half-way back to the tavern Sam had woken up and was yelling at Tim to stop. Sam would not stop running back to his father, but since Sam is bigger than he is he catches up to Tim just as he was almost there. Tim eventually got back to the tavern and Sam reluctantly went along to check on their father. He was all right, only a little battered around. Sam ran away from the tavern and just as he was far enough away from Life and Tim waved good-bye to them and left.

Seasons pass; fall gives way to the unfriendly Winter and that is the time of the year when the Meeker family exchanges cattle for money in Verplanks, a town near the Hudson River. When they are approximately to their destination they come across some cowboys that are cattle thief's that say they are Patriots. They had noticed that Life was going to be selling beef that might end up in the hands of Loyalists and they threatened him to give them the livestock and other goods. Luckily for them there is a group of people called escorts that frightened the cowboys off.

Finally, Life and Tim get to Verplanks, and make their trades. On their way back home it starts to snow, it takes them an extra day to get to their residence because of the harsh weather. To be safe and sound Life goes up the road ahead of Tim every five minutes or so because cautious about meeting more cowboys. One time that Life went up the road Tim notices that it has been longer than he is usually gone and begins to worry. Tim starts to think of what actions to take if they cowboys come up to him and his father or the group of people isn t there to protect him. Tim gets a little farther up the trail and sees the cowboys and he outsmarts them by acting as if they are a group of escorts.

He pretends that he does not have any supplies or food and asks them if they have any provisions. The cowboys get upset because they aren t sure if the boy is telling the truth or not and start to argue with each other, some were saying that its not worth it to meddle with the boy and the others were saying that the boy is lying. They hear dogs in the background and the cowboys think that it is a group of escorts, so they leave Tim there. Tim is extremely proud of himself and was thinking that Sam would be proud of him too because he outsmarted a whole group of cowboys.

When Tim finally gets home he tells his mother, Susannah, about his Life s disappearance and how he got away from the cowboys. He also mentioned that Life was probably kidnapped and more than likely taken to prison. It was up to Susannah to run the tavern and take care of the household duties. Later on Tim and his mother find out that Eliphalet died from becoming sickly in the prison ships and along with fifty others he died of the common flu.

Soon after that, the British troops come through Redding and all the residents are confused as to why they are there. The British soldiers knock down a door of a Patriot s house and take prisoner all of the other Patriots that were taking refuge there. As they were leaving town Tim follows them and just as they were about out of the area the troops were ambushed. There was an old farmer s house with approximately six Patriots in it and they fired upon the approaching British company. However, they British troops retaliated by breaking down the wall of the house, killing all of the Patriots, and then they burned down the building.

After that encounter Sam s troop set up an encampment not all too far from that area. Tim found Sam, and they were quite happy to see one another for it has been such a long time since they d seen each other. While they are visiting Sam tells Tim that he should butcher the cattle and save the meat before anyone tries to steal it again. Tim wanted to hold on to the livestock and try to sell them to someone because that was thy only way he could make money. While Sam and Tim were visiting again, they noticed that the cattle were making peculiar noises. There was a few cowboys trying to steal the livestock from the barn.

Tim got all but one remaining lost cow back into the barn, and Sam ran after the thieves, but when he caught up to them they knocked him out. Sam got wrongfully accused as the guilty party, even though his family defended him in court. His punishment was death; he was to be shot by a firing squad. Tim was angered so greatly by the court s decision that he sharpened his bayonet as much as he could. To get to the prison Tim charged a sleeping guard with the bayonet and as they guard awoke he threw it over the wall of the prison wall to Sam, and then ran off, avoiding all of the guns being fired at him.

As he was running up a hill Tim felt a tug at his shoulder, he had been shot, but he continued along his way despite it. When he was far enough away from the prison Tim realizes that Sam was not in his cell, and that they had moved everyone out of that penitentiary. All of Tim s efforts to help his brother were in vain. Irrevocably execution day came and everyone in the crowd was watching the lashings and hangings of other criminals.

It was now Sam s turn for his ultimate punishment, the executioners put a sac over his face and three men held their guns to him. They were so close that the barrels were practically touching him, then they fired. Sam didn t die right away and was withering around and another man finally shot and killed him. After the war Tim and Susannah left town and moved to Pennsylvania. Tim took himself a wife, had children and opened his own tavern. Susannah would never talk of be kind to any Patriot because of her son s and her husband s death.

Overall this book was wonderfully written it grabs you from the beginning and never makes you want to put it down. The imagery in this novel is fantastic, you can see in your mind all of the various places that the authors describe. They story is very believable, you can almost picture yourself in any of the characters places. I would definitely recommend reading this book to anyone, even if you aren t interested in the Revolution era or war stories, this book is a superb read and I truly am happy that I chose this as my outside reading novel.
