The novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald paints a perfect picture of a lady in the 20 's. Daisy was a woman that had "something special" about her; whenever she would speak to a man he would get weak in the knees. Her beauty captured those men's eyes and offered no surrender.
Her carefree attitude made her seem constantly content and satisfied with herself along with the life that she lead. To the common observer, she would seem elegant, wealthy, respected and confident. However, beneath the beauty and elegance, and wealth lies an insecure, dependent, materialistic fool. Somehow, Daisy managed to simultaneously build up men's admiration with her innocence while slowly and destructively she would be breaking them Daisy's appearance is one of the first things to draw her admires attention. Her second cousin, Nick described her as, "Her face was sad and lovely with bright things in it, bright eyes and a bright passionate mouth... " (9). The image she portrayed molded peoples minds to think that she was trustworthy, educated, loving lady.
As shown in her manner of dressing symbolize Daisy's personality; it was folly, white and almost angelic. Her and ne best friend Jordan always wore beautiful long innocent like dresses, "They were both in white and their dresses were rippling and fluttering as if they had just been blown back in after a short flight around the house" (8). Her appearance gave her a look of lightness and gave off a feeling of innocence, which eluded others into believing that Daisy did no wrong. Another factor of the portrayed Fitzgerald was painting was Daisy's speech said; it a lot about her character. It had the power to sneak into anyone's ear; grab their attention and keep it for long periods of time. She had a sweet almost inviting tone to it.
Even Nick was intrigued by the sweetness of her voice, "It was the kind of voice that the ear follows up and down as if each speech is an arrangement of notes that will never be played again" (9). Daisy's voice expressed everything she was feeling at the time; not only by dialogue, but by a matter of tone. It was rich and "full of money" as Gatsby would say: like the manner of her dressing her voice had a lightness and innocence about it. It flowed smoothly but often had hints of sadness with a voice that has the capability to control someone's mind, and made it extremely hard for anyone to break away.
Daisy's carefree attitude was what displayed her weakness the most. Daisy lived day by day and depended on the decisions of others to know how to run her life, "What " ll we do with ourselves this afternoon... and the day after that and the next thirty years?" (118). She had no idea how to make her own decisions, using others to make the choice for her. Daisy, although, made it seem as though she was leading her own life, but secretively she would be controlling her friends into thinking that they were just along for the ride.
This just goes to show what kind of control Daisy had over her life. She seemed tone a lost soul. The only thing that prevented her from showing this to the public was her structured life with Tom. Daisy's disabilities to handel conflicts upset her. If Daisy didn't have anyone to look after and take care of her business, she would never last a single day in the real world. In conclusion if one were to take away Daisy's support, she would spiral out of control and most likely lose what now are her strong points.
Because of her support and love form Tom, Daisy believed that she can be as careless as she wants to, and everything will be taken care of for her. To best describe Daisy (and Tom) Nick said, "They were careless people Tom and Daisy-they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money on their vast carelessness, or whatever if was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made" (180 - 181). Behind the wonderful sweet, innocent Daisy there is a fake, unsure, beautiful little fool. Bibliography:
