Ernest Hemmingway uses his characters to invoke a variety of thoughts and ideas in the readers mind. Each characters action defines their individual personalities and belief systems. The main focus of For Whom the Bell Tolls center upon the life of Robert Jordan, a military explosives specialist, whose sole purpose in the Spanish Revolution is the demolition of strategic bridges, trains, and various other targets. His interactions with various characters help to define his personality and belief system.

The characters of Pilar and Maria demonstrate his loyalty, bravery, leadership, and philosophical thoughts. His antagonist, Pablo brings out his loathing of cowardice and his own bravery and heroic nature. Robert Jordan represents Hemmingway s ideal of the heroic man. Character (s) Traits Robert Jordan has personality traits spanning various aspects of the heroic side of human nature, in addition he displays ingenuity and perfectionism. His actions also show a high degree of introspection and philosophical thought.

His relationship with Maria and the conflict it causes results in Robert Jordan s discovery of his personal values. He struggles to understand what defines his life and resolve the conflict of what to live or die for. When Pablo destroyed the equipment necessary to detonate the TNT, on the night before the demolition of the bridge, this makes Robert s mission seem all the more impossible. By continuing however, he showed that he had both the desire to overcome circumstances and the bravery to fight for a cause he believed in. These traits give him a heroic stature. By blowing up the bridge, he showed his courage and dignity in the face of impossible circumstances and certain death.

Mr. Jordan s ingenuity and perfectionism appear in the moments before he turns a bridge into mere rubble. Robert Jordan took great pains and time, to make the bridge explode smoothly and accurately. He requires the destruction of the bridge to be carried out with the precision of a scientific event, a demonstration of perfectionism. Jordan s ingenuity becomes another aspect that attributes to the manner in which he explodes the bridge. He uses grenades to detonate the sticks of dynamite after Pablo had thrown his detonators and charges into a watery grave.

Pablo s actions caused Robert to feel a great deal anger because the explosion resulted in the fatality of his friend Anselmo. This anger demonstrated his loyalty and love for a colleague. His dedication to a just cause influences the decisions he makes in his personal life. Due to Roberts extreme loyalty to his job he initially appears to care very little for the pleasures of women, and has taken no wife at the beginning of this novel. Pilar and Pablo play pivotal roles in both the story and the development of Robert Jordans character. Their personality traits come into direct conflict with each other, affecting Robert in wide variety of ways.

Pilar can be best described as an aggressive, dedicated, outspoken women who feels comfortable leading a group or controlling a situation. Pilar demonstrates her skill at various times within the text, most notable however, in dealings within her group. She constantly battles with the various men of the camp, demanding absolute respect, and becoming the defacto leader of the group. In nearly every occasion she commands the utmost respect from the various members of the group. Pablo in contrast, once a brave leader and a proud man, who metamorphoses into a dangerous and unreliable coward.

In his prime, Pablo led a group of enraged villagers to avenge the injustices that the Fascists committed, killing multiple Fascist soldiers and twenty known fascists. However, in the present he illustrates his cowardice by stealing and discarding Robert s blasting caps. He does this because he fears what the Fascists may do to his home and himself, if Robert destroys the bridge. Although Maria is Robert Jordans love interest she has little to do with the plot of this book. Her main purpose in the book remains to create a dilemma for Robert Jordan. His love for her makes him consider the danger of his actions, what he risks, and by what philosophy his life he should live his life by.

Her character also provides an example of the evils committed by the Fascists. Prior to meeting Robert the Fascists took Maria, shaved her head and drove her to the brink of insanity. She provided this piece with a character that the reader can feel sorrow for while justifying their hate for the Fascists. Conflicts Of course, Robert Jordan s internal conflict about how he should live his life was one of the most important story elements.

Throughout the novel, Robert Jordan gradually builds a complex relationship with a crop headed Spanish girl, named Maria. By the end of the novel, the two fall madly in love with each other, which makes Roberts mission that much harder to complete. He faces the reality that he might die leaving his true love alone on earth. This realization makes him ponder if he should live a long life or live a full and complete life in a matter of days. This illustrates the conflict between his deep love for Maria and his dedication to duty. The author uses Pablo to evoke Mr.

Jordans anger, rage, and to demonstrate his restraint in the face of adversity. Pablo becomes Robert s chief antagonist in this piece. Pablo s constant disagreements with Mr. Jordans action, his drunkenness, and most importantly his final act of cowardice enrages Robert Jordan to a point of temporary insanity. Mr. Jordan thinks numerous times about how he could best eliminate Pablo.

Personal conflict plays a large role in the actions of the characters. Pablo fought against Robert Jordan even though they were on the same side. Pilar battles with the men for respect. Andres also met with physical conflict when he attempted to give Robert Jordans information to General Gold. He suffered a great deal of resistance from the men who were on his side while trying to deliver the information. This gave the story an element of drama.

Conflicts also arise from the interaction of the various social groups portrayed in the novel. The characters reactions to conflicts ranged from rage, to bitter shouting, to all out fight and massacre. The most important and noteworthy conflict arose between the Republic and the Fascists. The actions of the majority of the main characters in the book result from the conflict between the freedom fighters and the Fascists. Pilar tells a story that represents the brave struggle of the villagers against the fascists.

The villagers became enraged by the injustices committed by the fascists and became violent, killing 4 or 5 guards and twenty known fascists. Ironically the coward Pablo was the leader of this hollow mob. Everyone, Robert Jordan, El Sorts men, Pilar, and at a time even Pablo fought against the what they considered injustices done by the fascists. Themes Many themes that came out of the book that were noteworthy, however, there are only three truly important themes. Primarily, the book deals with the ideas of self sacrifice, heroic struggle for a just cause, and self realization. Robert Jordan clearly demonstrates self sacrifice when he completes his mission after having fallen in love with Maria.

Robert knew that the possibility existed that he might die and yet he was willing to sacrifice himself to complete the mission. He realized that his life was small compared to the cause that he was fighting for. Therefore he gave up his life so that liberty and the Republic could survive. Robert Jordan represented the heroic struggle for a just cause, but so did Anselmo who gave his life to detonate the explosives. As Robert Jordan progressed in his relationship with Maria and his love grew for her, he realized that he had more to sacrifice than just his life, he had his love. It was only a question of time before his work might end his life and he had to decide how he wanted to live and die.

He had to decide whether it was better to be selfish and live or give his life for a just cause. He risked his life, which provided him with both sorrow and a feeling of fulfillment. An example of self-sacrifice and fighting for a just cause can be witnessed recently in the men and women who served during the Desert Storm conflicts. Their willingness to fight against the tyranny of oppression in another country, illustrates both their courage and heroic stature.

These soldiers had to face the reality that every day they could be killed by a SCUD missile or hostile forces. Like Robert Jordan they succeeded in their efforts but, with great personal loss. Many of the soldiers must live the rest of their lives with Gulf War Syndrome.
