Mary Todd, Abraham Lincoln s wife, was a multi-faceted woman, whose personality seemingly contains many contradictory aspects. During the Civil War, she spent a good deal of her time refurbishing the White House and shopping for herself. At the same time, she also made many trips to hospitals to take food, flowers and other things to the wounded soldiers. She was a fearful, nervous and unpredictable person. She was said to have had a sharp tongue, which made her disliked by many people. She was a supportive wife, however, when she was in her impulsive moods, she tended to say and do things that hurt her husband s feelings.

Mary Todd Lincoln is one of the most controversial characters in America s history. During the Civil War, Mary Todd s behavior was highly disapproved of and censured by the press. She traveled unescorted, attended dances without her husband, and apparently ignored the war effort when it needed her most. Reporters focused especially on her shopping trips. Mary Cleaner Ames wrote that, While sister women scraped lint, secured bandages, and put on nurses caps and gave their all to their country, including their husbands and sons, the wife of the President spent her time rolling to and fro between Washington and Hew Your, intent on making extravagant purchases for the White House and herself (Rutberg, 1995 p. 62). The Congress allotted her, twenty thousand dollars to refurbish the White House, but she spent twenty-seven thousand dollars.

Her excuse to spend so much money was that it proved she had culture and fine taste and deserved to be the wife of a President. Mary Todd was also a compassionate lady who visited hospitals, took food and flowers to the wounded soldiers. She was also known to have read and wrote letters for them. Mrs. Lincoln was opposed to slavery, and when the time came she helped the Contraband's (freed slaves) with $ 200 for bed coverings. She had taken the money from a fund designated for white soldiers.

She also secured jobs for many former slaves, as clerks, watchmen, and lamplighters. She even hired a former slave, Elizabeth Keckley, as her personal dressmaker. When Abraham Lincoln was elected President, they moved to the Capitol and Mary Todd was stunned by the hostility of Washington society. She was ignored by most of the influential women in the political arena and treated as if she were not worthy to be a President s wife. Mrs. Lincoln had an impulsive behavior, that she never controlled and because of that she offended many people.

Mary Todd was known to have bouts with nervous breakdowns. During these periods, she was so fearful and nervous that her husband would have to hurry home to calm her down. She also suffered hallucinations. After Mr. Lincoln was assassinated, her behavior and irrational fears became and increasing concern to her son Robert. He was so concerned about his mother s failing health and odd behavior that he instigated an insanity hearing.

A jury of 12 men declared Mary insane. As a result, Mary spent almost four months in a private sanitarium. In 1876, a second jury found her to be sane. Although Mary was considered to be a caring mother and supportive wife, she would sometimes hurt the President s feelings, in a moment of impulsive misbehavior. However, for the most part, she loved her husband and was loved by him.

President Lincoln made the following remark at a White House reception, My wife is as handsome as when she was a girl, and I, a poor nobody then, fell in love with her, the President paused, gazing at Mary, and what is more, I have never fallen out (Collins, 1994 p. 90). Mary caused controversy as First Lady. She made both friends and enemies while her husband was President. In recent years a proposed reason for her erratic behavior is that it was possibly due to undiagnosed diabetes. Bibliography Baker, J. (1987). Mary Todd Lincoln: A biography.
