&# 65279; The Evils that Plague Macbeth Macbeth s tragedy was the result of the confusion of the three premonitions, Lady Macbeth s intimidation and influence over Macbeth to push him to become king, and his own misguided determination to control his future causes Macbeth s misery and eventual downfall. When the witches told Banquo his future about a long line of kings to come, Macbeth thought it meant he would have a long line of kings in Scotland. Lady Macbeth pushes Macbeth by intimidating him, and pushing him by belittling him to do what he wanted to do in the first place. His insecurities about his people becoming suspicious what he had done to become king, made him total insecure about other serious decisions that came about. Once he became king he would stop at nothing to stay king and have his children become kings. The first of the four characters is Duncan.

Since Macbeth interacts with Duncan only for a few brief scenes before Duncan's death, Macbeth's attitude towards him changes very rapidly. Before Macbeth hears the witches first prophecy, he is very close to Duncan, and would not even think of doing any harm to him. When the thought of murdering Duncan crosses his mind immediately after he finds that he has just been named Thane of Cawdor, and he cannot believe he yield[s] to that suggestion / Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair / And make my seated heart knock at my ribs (Holt ct I, Scene III, ). In Scene 5 of Act 1, however, his vaulting ambition is starting to take over, but partly because of his wifes persuasion.

He agrees that they must catch the nearest way (Holt Act I Scene II), and kill Duncan that night. On the other hand, as the time for murder comes nearer, he begins giving himself reasons not to murder Duncan. Because he is afraid he would get caught in the act, of trying to kill the king. When Banquo and Macbeth first see the three witches, they are seen as the lowest form of human kind, and the witches look of disgust seems to follow them throughout the meeting with the witches, but what the witches say effect them both. When Macbeth hears his three premonitions Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and king here after, which interested him, into listening to what they had to say.

Which were told by the witches, were one of the factors which contributed to the degeneration of his character. He was the Thane of Glamis already, but when the king s messenger came to Macbeth and said he was the Thane of Cawdor, he knew the other premonition was going to come true. Once Macbeth sees the witches, they tell him his future as king and Macbeth s response is that he wants to hear more. He does not seem to want to know how they know all their knowledge about him.

Which might suggest, that he may already have had these ambition, he does not seem to question the witches, as if he already is planning it. Macbeth has gotten no peace by satisfying his ambitions, he experiences life rather, as a fitful fever, (Macrone 73) that means a fever that comes in fits. As a result of the prophecies, It aroused Macbeth's curiosity of how he could be King of Scotland. As the play progresses, Macbeth slowly relies on the witches prophecies. Shakespeare uses the witches as a remedy for Macbeth's curiosity which corrupts his character and leads him to kill the king. Lady Macbeth s request that the spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, come to unsex her and fill her with the direst cruelty (Holt Act I, Scene V).

The supernatural world will aid her in the hardening of her heart and make it possible for her to carry out her malicious plan. Lady Macbeth pushed Macbeth into killing the king by saying but screw your courage to the sticking- place, and we ll not fail (Holt ln 60 - 61). When Lady Macbeth said that she questions Macbeth s courage, and pushed him into her plan about killing the king. After Macbeth wins the battle, Banquo and the king and other Thanes go to Macbeth s castle. When the king comes to the castle, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth start to plot to kill King Duncan. On the night planned to kill Duncan, Macbeth is waiting for Lady Macbeth to ring the signal bell to go up the stairs to Duncan s quarters.

He sees a vision of a floating dagger. The interest of the dagger is that it leads Macbeth towards the chamber by the presence of evil of the dagger being covered with blood. Then the bell rings and Macbeth proceeds stealthily up the staircase to Duncan s room. The influence of Macbeth's wife, Lady Macbeth, also contributed to his degeneration in character. Lady Macbeth's character in the beginning reveals that she is a lovable person. When Lady Macbeth was ready to kill King Duncan herself, it showed that Lady Macbeth could not murder King Duncan because he reminded her of her father (Holt Act II Scene II).

This proves that Lady Macbeth has a heart deep inside her. Lady Macbeth plays an important role in this play because she provided a scheme which caused Macbeth to assassinate King Duncan. After Macbeth had killed King Duncan, he later regrets his wrong doing. At the point of this play the audience can note the change in Macbeth's character.

Macbeth's first murder was a trying experience for him, however after the first murder, killing seemed to be the only solution to maintain his reign over the people of Scotland. Therefore, it was Lady Macbeth who introduced the concept of murder to Macbeth. Macbeth's ambition also influenced his declining character. Macbeth is still frightened by his own imaging (Macrone 22) of murdering the king. Because he does not know if he should do it, or not. However, Macbeth's ambition had not been strong enough to carry the motive to kill King Duncan (Tragedy 174).

Lady Macbeth's influence also comes in to play because if it were not for Lady Macbeth, his ambition would not have been intensified enough to drive him to obtain and maintain his title of King of Scotland no matter what it took, even if it meant murdering. Macbeth's ambition influenced the cause of his new character. This new character of Macbeth contained greed, violence, stop at nothing, and power hunger. Macbeth shows this when he kills King Duncan and Banquo. Macbeth confused two of the three new premonitions which was the burning wood coming up Dunsinane Hill, and the other he would not be killed by a man born of women. Burning wood up Dunsinane Hill, he thought it meant that trees would grow up the hill and then start on fire.

But what it really meant that Macduff and Malcolm were going to walk burning trees up the hill to camouflage his men. The premonition about a man not born of women, again Macbeth thought it was going to be a beast that kills him, and not a man. Which was really Malcolm because, his mother died while in labor, and a man delivered Malcolm. The three witches predict what he is going to ask and produce the first apparition, which is an armed head.

Macbeth! , Macbeth! , Macbeth! , beware of Macduff; beware thane of Fife. Dismiss me: enough (Holt Act VI, Scene I). The first apparition tells Macbeth to Beware of Macduff. The second apparition appears as a bloody child, he says: Be bloody, bold, and resolute; laugh to scorn the power of man, none of women born shell harm Macbeth (Holt Act VI, Scene I).

His apparition informs Macbeth that no man born from woman can harm him. Finally, the last apparition appears and is a child crowned, with a tree in his hand. The apparition is saying that he will never be defeated until Great Birnam wood shall come against him to high. These apparition convinced Macbeth that this was his fate and became over confident, and leads him to his death. The use of the supernatural in Macbeth results quite well with the respect of the unknown. Without The witches, the ghost, the visions, and the apparitions, the play Macbeth would be dull and tiresome play.

The character of Macbeth is a classic example of a Shakespearean tragic hero. The three points which contribute greatly to Macbeth's degeneration are the prophecy which was told to him by the witches (Holt Act I Scene I), how Lady Macbeth influenced and manipulated Macbeth's judgment, and finally Macbeth's long time ambition which drove his desire to be king. Macbeth's growing character degenerates from a noble man to a violent individual. The supernatural interference which is provide by the three witches and Banquo s ghost represents the evil in this play. Another is Shakespeare s display of fascination of wickedness in Macbeth, he did this by showing images of blackness, corruption, and despair.

Banquo s ghost is part of Shakespeare s wickedness because he only appears when Macbeth wants him to be at his party, but when he doesn t the ghost leaves. Supernatural interference creates contemporary drama (Thorndike 173). The evil in the play is portrayed more by darkness and deceit in the opening of the play. The darkness moves around castle like a sickness killing King Duncan and Banquo. The witches appearing in Act I had a huge effect on the story line. Even before the witches were introduce we know the next few minuets will be very important, because of the significant weather change.

Notice it has become very dark and tense this instantly makes the audience aware of their surroundings. When the witches appear you notice a good use of pathetic fallacy (Internet), because the sky is dark and gray and so is the mood of the characters. All of Macbeth s murders help to create suspense for the audience. His murder helps the audience feel like Macbeth can not control his own life and his actions. In the beginning of the play there are two generals. One is Macbeth, and the other is Banquo.

As the play continues the relationship between the two start to go bad, which ends up in murder (Teaching Shakespeare 93). Macbeth s desire to have Banquo at the party is ironic, because Macbeth just had people kill him. After having Banquo murdered, and unsuccessfully attempting to have Banquo s son murdered Macbeth becomes excited. When Macbeth toast him at the party and say he wish he could be there, and then his ghost shows up and Macbeth starts to yell at him.

This caused Macbeth to act in a wild manner, making people at the party suspicious of his actions. Finally Macbeth says leave and the ghost leaves, then everyone at the party looks at him like he is crazy. After a while Macbeth calms down and the dinner party starts up again, then Macbeth wishes Banquo can be there again and then he shows up once more (Brush up your Shakespeare). Macduff s household was murdered in there own house in Fife, they where killed because they were related to Macduff.

Macduff was an enemy to the king because he joined Malcolm army, instead of staying and fight with Macbeth. But Macduff was not mad because he knew that he caused Macbeth to kill his family. But he did want revenge for the killing of his family. Soon after this Macduff retaliates with the attack on Macbeth s castle. Macbeth starts to fight Macduff and Malcolm outside the gates of his castle, witch was a bad mistake because if he would have stayed in the castle he would have won.

He goes out and fights them. While Macbeth is running around the battle field killing, Macduff is looking for him hoping no one has killed him. In conclusion, the prophecies given to him by the witches, Lady Macbeth's influence and plan, and his intensified ambition, all contributed greatly to his degeneration of character which resulted in his downfall to death. If it was not for Macbeth falsely taking the witches prophecies, he would probably be king of Scotland and not dead.

Lady Macbeth also relied on the supernatural by her soliloquy of calling upon the evil sprits to give her the power to plot the murder of Duncan without any remorse or conscience. Lady Macbeth s intimidation and constant pushing of Macbeth s manhood caused the death of her husband. Not to mention her in saneness and her death. Therefore Macbeth character displays strong signs of a tragic hero, making him the ideal classic example.

These are some of the many reason that plage Macbeth and eventually led him to the lose all of his loved ones, and made his loyal people not like him, and loss of the crown and death.
