Trade union or also called Labour union is an association of labourers in a particular trade, industry, or plant, formed to obtain by collective action improvements in pay, working conditions, and social and political status. Even with more workplace agreements in force in our modern Australian environment, unions are stilled needed to serve many other purposes. With more workplace agreements, many of them could overlap with some of the purposes of a union. But as many agreements as there can be, there will be problems or situations that an employer and employee will not agree on. Therefore unions would still be utilised for support and security of the employee.

Trade unions have an existence to improve and protect the conditions under which their members work. Before Unions existed many Australian employees worked more than 60 hours as their normal working week. The first annual holiday was achieved by a strong union campaign in 1941, which was awarded to employees as a one week off from work. Unions are organisations of employed workers formed to undertake collective bargaining with employers and try to achieve improved working conditions for its members.

The Queensland Council of Unions has a major function in representing affiliated unions on a substantial range of industry, training and community organisations, some of which - Metropolitan Urban Transport Committee - VETEC (Vocational Education Training and Employment Commission) State Planning and Development Council - Sun super Pty Ltd (superannuation) - State Public Sector Superannuation Scheme - Office of Economic Development for the City of Brisbane - Advisory Committee on Employment Equity - Portable Long Service Leave Board - Queensland Health Promotion in the Workplace Committee - Aboriginal Employment Development Policy Committee - Vocational Education Training and Employment Commission 1 Attitudes of government to unions and of unions to management vary greatly from country to country. Trade union is an association of workers established to improve Their first and foremost task is to make sure that members get at least the minimum pay and conditions as set out in awards to those workers. Unions work to see that these awards are updated regularly to keep pace with the cost of living and social expectations. A trade union represents its members in determining wages and working conditions through the process of collective bargaining with the employer. When agreement cannot be reached, their last resource is to conduct a strike against the employer.

For example the Waterfront strike at the start of 1998. The Maritime Workers Union supported the Waterside workers from unfair dismissal from the company Patrick Stevedores Pty Ltd. The waterside workers were dismissed because they belonged to a union and were replaced with employees who were willing to work under workplace agreements. The strike was a success due to the redundant employees barricading themselves to the entry of the company, not allowing the new employees and trucks to proceed with their work. In the past Unions have made many successes.

For example, they won equal pay for women. Before this women were paid up to 25 % less than men doing the same job until 1978. Unions supported the employees arguing that women were just as good as their male colleagues and should be paid accordingly. Later on the Unions successfully argued for women to be able to take maternity leave up to 12 months from their job to have a child, and then return back to work. And now unions are working to get the laws changed so men can get family leave as well. Unions will support members on anything which may effect their work.

For example; environment (health and safety, comfort, amenities and accommodation etc. ), training (apprenticeships, on-the-job, or out-of-work courses, national training standards, skills development etc. ), and unjust treatment like unfair dismissal, sexual or racial harassment. More and more, unions are working with employers to make better workplaces for employees. This is partly due to award restructuring and enterprise bargaining. The unions priority is still to protect and enhance workers conditions, but with a new workplace structure there is more chance of achieving results without having to apply to an industrial commission. Unions play are playing a key role in developing training, careers structures and health and safety initiations in connection with management. 2 When you become a union member you are entitled to the support and security that the union offers.

The help you receive from unions does not only mean gaining a wage increase. Unions have many money saving services: discount legal services, often free consultations, discount medical and dental services, credit union and loan facilities, low cost travel services, taxation advice, sickness and benevolent funds and retailers that offer special Union discounts. 3 A main purpose of the trade union was to maintain a minimum rate of pay for its members, a purpose that led unions to extend or delimit both their membership and the number of employers with whom hey bargained. The most important function of trade unions in democratic, industrialised countries is the negotiation of collective agreements with employers. In some cases collective agreements specify wages, hours, working conditions, and benefits in great detail.

In other cases unions have used their political power to win enactment of laws that provide benefits and protection-increased pensions and unemployment compensation, safety regulations, extended vacations, educational and maternity leave, housing, health insurance, and perhaps most important, carefully monitored grievance procedures to protect workers against any arbitrary action. 4 Trade Union is an association of employed people doing the same or similar work or working in the same industry, formed to undertake collective bargaining with employers, and try to achieve improved working conditions for its members. Ever since Unions have came to existence they have achieved many goals they set out for their members, such as raising wages and fighting back their jobs due to unfair dismissal. Unions have had many positive outcomes since they started till our modern Australian environment. Therefore Unions continue to provide a voice for the worker in negotiations and disputes with Bibliography: Trade Union, Microsoft (R) Encarta (R) 97 Encyclopedia.
