Macbeth by William Shakespeare From national hero to vicious tyrant; Macbeth s fall from grace In this essay I intend to examine the play Macbeth and how the central character changes. I will attempt to explain these changes with reference to the events of the plot. The play is set in medieval Scotland where the Scots are under attack from the Norwegians. Macbeth, Thane of Games, leads the Scots to victory. Duncan, King of Scotland, is very proud of Macbeth and has a great liking to him. He is rewarded with another title Thane of Candor.

He is seen as the saviour of Scotland. Macbeth has by three weird sisters (usually it is presumed they are witches although the play never states that they are) that he will become King of Scotland. Duncan is going to stay at Macbeth s castle, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth (his wife) plot to kill Duncan so that Macbeth can become King. Once Duncan is killed a few suspicions are raised. This leads Macbeth to go after people he feels threatened by. He ends up killing people to cover up the original crime.

He declines to a very evil person. Macbeth becomes a dictator. He rules by fear, also he does not treat his men fairly. The three weird sisters have foretold Macbeth s future to him in a subtle riddle. This riddle leads Macbeth into thinking he is invincible. The power of man, for none born of woman shall harm Macbeth This is part of the riddle that the three weird sisters say, this is what makes Macbeth believe he is invincible, he thinks nothing can stop him from gaining absolute power.

This is what I think made Macbeth become a tyrant as he thought no one could harm or rule him. Macbeth murdered Duncan first but then he had to murder the Kings two guards to cover his deed up and then he had to murder Banquo as he had suspicions and so on. Macbeth was getting in deeper and deeper because of his obsession with his own power. By the end of the play Macbeth had very few emotional feelings towards anyone, he did not show any signs of morning his wife s death. Macbeth is finally overthrow by Macduff (whose family Macbeth had had slain) as he fitted the three weird sisters riddle.

Macduff was not born of woman as when he was born he had a caesarean section. At the beginning of the play Macbeth was the countries hero, he was highly respected throughout the land. As Macbeth gained more power it made him more corrupt, it also made him do more devious, cunning and evil things to help him keep his power. This was because he thought he could get away with it, as he believed he was invincible.

When Macbeth gained absolute power and complete control over Scotland King of Scotland, he was almost completely corrupt; he had very little in the way of emotions. Macbeth was also very selfish, as he was not doing any good for the country although Macbeth did suffer from some guilt as he had many a sleepless night, with nightmares. At the beginning of the play Macbeth was a man who would go to great lengths to honour his country. He was not interested in any schemes to get him to be King. Macbeth is influenced by Lady Macbeth; she makes him strive towards being King. She drives Macbeth on when he is too scared to carry on.

This happens in Act 2 scene 2, lines 54 56 I ll go no more, I am afraid to think what I have done; look on t again, I dare not this is in response to Lady Macbeth telling him to put the two daggers he used to kill Duncan with back. Macbeth does not have the strength or will power to do this, he finds it impossible. Lady Macbeth at the time is much more motivated than Macbeth, she is more ambitious and determined so she promptly puts them back. Later on in the play, as Macbeth gains more power, he becomes much more in control of himself and he is aware that he is falling into evil. Macbeth acts on his own accord and Lady Macbeth begins to have nightmares and dreams about what they have done, she cannot cope with it all Macbeth is handling it much better than her. The roles have reversed.

Lady Macbeth becomes mentally unstable. In Act 5 scene 1 she tries to wash imaginary bloodstains from her hands which, had come from the murders. Macbeth becomes completely obsessive towards the end of the play with no normal emotions or feelings whatsoever. He is like a zombie with no real feelings just evil intent and yet he knows he is / has falling into evil he observes this through out the end of the play. When news of his wife s death is brought to him he thinks of life as a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury signifying nothing Macbeth as a character went, from good to evil from one extreme to the other. During medieval times people were not educated as well as they are at present, so they did not have such a great understanding of how most things worked and why.

For example, they would not have known that the four seasons were to do with the positioning of the earth in relation to the sun. This led to the idea of a supernatural world; this was how they would explain the unexplainable. The three weird sisters were most likely to have been seen as something that could have possibly happened. Most people in Shakespeare s time would have probably not even questioned it.

It is only since scientific advances that we can prove what is happening that we are able to question such theories. The three weird sisters help kick start the play with the first of their prophecies. This also gives Shakespeare an easy way of making Macbeth act in the way he does. The weird sisters and the visions help link the plot.

Banquo s ghost which, frightens Macbeth, is also there to help link up the plot, this is another part of the supernatural world which occurs in many of Shakespeare s plays. Lady Macbeth was originally the driving force behind Macbeth, telling him what to do as she led him. She bullied him into killing Duncan. Her ambition was formed after she read Macbeth s letter saying that Duncan was coming to stay. Lady Macbeth did not want anyone to get in the way of her ambitions. She was also a very devious character as she talked Macbeth into doing things that he did not want to.

Act 1 scene 6 shows this. She talks to Macbeth in such a way that most of her words have double meanings e. g. When Duncan came to stay she put business as her top priority and that she will take care of it. This could mean organising a banquet or organising a murder. Lady Macbeth does not define the meaning of business.

During the play Lady Macbeth switches from being the driving force behind Macbeth, when she wished to the Gods to make her more evil (more like a man), to someone in the background. This happens as Macbeth s power increases, but as his grows her s declines along with her mental strength. Lady Macbeth bears no or little influence on Macbeth towards the end of the play. By the end of the play she can only worry the doctor with her bizarre dreams and nightmares.

Macbeth was Scotland s greatest hero at the beginning of the play, he had power but it was not significant, as he does not use it to his own advantage or personal gain. As he gains more power he begins to abuse it all of his moral values go. For King and Country become for me and myself. Once Macbeth was King of Scotland he only wanted to pursue his ambition, to gain power which, Macbeth had reached by becoming King of Scotland but Macbeth strived to protect and keep his power, even if it meant being a tyrant. Macbeth becomes more and more ruthless in his efforts to keep his power even though he has been told that he will fall only when Birname wood moves to Dunsaine and he can only be harmed by someone not born of woman. Both of these are impossible to happen, from Macbeth s view so he believes he is invincible which, I think is why he became a megalomaniac.

The two prophecies (given by the three weird sisters) also came with another, beware Macduff. Macbeth tries to kill Macduff, as he feels threatened by him even though Macduff has not done anything to Macbeth, Macbeth is just following what the prophecy said. He was trying to take precautions. It is a problem for Macbeth not being able to quite fully understand or explain the prophecies as it means he cannot make any real plans to protect himself.

This leads him to thinking he is invincible, and this makes him blind to see the need to respect the rights and feelings of his fellow peers and countrymen. Macbeth does not care for former friends and people who are deserting him as he feels he is invincible. This is show very well in a film of Macbeth where Macbeth does not reward Ross, hiss loyal servant and dear friend with a newly acquired title but he just chucks it to anyone who is near him, this in turn makes Ross rebel and leave Macbeth. Macbeth was vindictive to all of his men, he only ruled by fear most people would have fled at any chance. Throughout the play Macbeth is apt to change of opinion around him, he follows what he has been told.

Being happy with what the King had given and told him was enough for him and he was very pleased with it but Lady Macbeth had greater ambitions in mind, she persuaded him to commit high treason and kill a friend Duncan. The three weird sisters tell Macbeth his future and he sets out to make it happen. Macbeth was shaping his destiny the way he wanted it to be. Helping to make the good bits happen and trying to hinder the bits, which he did not like. This is why he went after Macduff and Banquo. Macbeth took an epic dive to his doom.

He was carving his own future by trying to make the prophesies come true. He was also to apt too accepting other people s opinions, but they do say love is blind and Macbeth proved this is if his love was true for Lady Macbeth. I very much doubt he would have done it if he knew the consequences. In my opinion the major reasons for Macbeth s degeneration were: 1. The 3 weird sisters telling his fortune that subconsciously made him strive towards the predictions. 2. Lady Macbeth who spurred him on as if to give him a kick start as he was weary of committing high treason 3.

and Macbeth s greed for power. Macbeth was power hungry and would go to any lengths to preserve or extend his power. He was a megalomaniac. I believe that Shakespeare wanted to teach people from this play that you have to make your own future and not follow something that someone else has planned for you. I also think that the main objective of this play was to show that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Shakespeare wrote the play for people to enjoy, but he has linked some very powerful messages in with the script.

The messages in the play leave the audience with some compelling thoughts to ponder over. A lot of them will be what if Macbeth hadn t seen the weird sisters. ? , what if Macbeth had killed France? ... , What if... ? All of the morals of this play are still relevant today. It can be seen in dictatorships of the world today, like Kim Il Sung of North Korea who has complete power but forces 1. 5 million people to starve each year just so he has a large arsenal of weapons to protect himself. In all, this is a very thought provoking play, still relevant today, even though it is over 400 years old.
