In the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare the main character Macbeth is a tragic hero according to Aristotle's characteristics of a tragic hero because he posses each of these characteristics. The first characteristic of a tragic hero that Macbeth possesses is that he is famous for being the man who led the Scottish army to victory in two recent battles. He is noble in the sense that he has the respect of his king and that he is respected by most people as one of if not the best warrior in Scotland. He is also prosperous as his king will reward him greatly for the service he has done for his country as Duncan gives him the title of Thane of Cawdor.

The next characteristic of a tragic hero that Macbeth has is that he is neither wholly good nor wholly evil by doing some good things such as saving his country from certain defeat, but he does do some things that could only be thought of as pure evil such as killing his king. The final characteristic that proves Macbeth as a tragic heroes the fact that he makes a vital mistake at some point in the course of the play in this case it is the fact that he made the choice to kill Duncan. With these facts combined I intend to prove that Macbeth is a Tragic hero according to Aristotle's characteristics of a tragic hero. The first of Aristotle's characteristics of a tragic hero is that the character Must be a man of fame, a man of nobility, and a man of prosperity, in this play Macbeth must posses this characteristic in order to be a tragic hero which I will now prove that he does. Macbeth is a man of fame in that he is well known for being one of the greatest warriors in Scotland and leading his army to victory in two recent battles They [Macbeth and Banquo] smack of honour both (1. 2 - 44). It is also known that Macbeth is noble by have the respect of the king of Scotland and of his fellow country men for saving the country What he hath lost, noble Macbeth hath won (1. 2 - 70).

The first example of Macbeth being prosperous is that it is reviled that he is Thane of Glamis and that King Duncan is about to give him the title of Thane of Cawdor with his former title greet Macbeth (1. 2 - 68). It is also known that Macbeth is prosperous when it is reviled that he has a wife that loves him and a large castle as his house Great Glamis! worthy Cawdor! (1. 5 - 53) My dearest love (1. 5 - 57). it is the fact that Macbeth is famous, noble, and prosperous that he has the first characteristic of a tragic hero according to Aristotle's characteristics of a tragic hero. The second characteristic of a tragic hero according to Aristotle's view of tragedy is that the character must not be purely good nor purely evil, this characteristic is again another attribute that Macbeth possesses. The first example if Macbeth showing his good side that I have chosen to tell about is that he has defended his country in battle saving it from defeat on two sides they were As cannons overcharged with double cracks; So they Doubly redoubled strokes upon the foe (1. 2 - 36).

The next example of Macbeth showing his good side is when he comes home and is greeted by Lady Macbeth he shows he is a loving husband My dearest love (1. 5 - 57). Macbeth had a very evil side to him as well as a good side thus making him not entirely good nor entirely evil. The first example of Macbeth showing his evil side is when he betrays and kills the man he has sworn loyalty to, King Duncan. I have done the deed. -Didst thou not hear a noise? (2. 2 - 14). He shows his evil side again with the ordering of another murder, this time his long time friend and comrade in arms Banquo. Both of you Know Banquo was your enemy (3. 1 - 114).

The combination of these facts show that Macbeth possesses the second characteristic of a tragic hero that he is neither wholly good nor wholly evil. Although the evil side may be predominant he still has some good in him. The third and final characteristic of a tragic hero according to Aristotle's view of tragedy is that the character must make a vital mistake or hamartia somewhere along the course of the play. The hamartia that Macbeth makes is that he choses to make the decision to trust the witches prophecy and kill Duncan in order to take his kingship I go, and it is done: the bell invites me. hear it not, Duncan; for it is a knell that summons thee to heaven or to hell (2. 1 - 62). The mistake that Macbeth makes is helped along by not only the witches but the main push to make the mistake is helped along by Lady Macbeth who helps Macbeth by giving him a plan his two chamberlains Will I with wine and wassail so convince, That memory Shall be a fume (1. 7 - 63).

Even though Lady Macbeth gave him the plan and spurred him on to kill Duncan the blame still falls on Macbeth for following through with the plan and killing Duncan I have done the deed (2. 2 - 14). The vital mistake that Macbeth for the last characteristic of a tragic hero is that he makes the mistake of killing Duncan thus condemning himself. In conclusion the Macbeth is a tragic hero according to Aristotle's view of tragedy because Macbeth has all of the characteristics of a tragic hero. First Macbeth is famous for his skills in battle, he is noble because he is respected by his king and fellow men, and he is prosperous because of treasures that have been bestowed upon him.

Next Macbeth is not entirely good nor is he entirely evil. Finally Macbeth makes a vital mistake or hamartia at some point in the play. These facts combined are what makes Macbeth a tragic hero.
